Addressing upcoming changes to Patreon (Apple App Store fees)

Hey everyone, I just wanted to make a post here to explain some upcoming changes, and how it will affect us.

From their release message: "Apple is requiring that Patreon use their in-app purchasing system and remove all other billing systems from the Patreon iOS app by November 2024. This means that starting in November, new memberships purchased in the iOS app will be subject to Apple's 30% App Store fee."

This means going forward, anyone who is subscribed through the Apple iOS Patreon App will start seeing the Apple fees on top of their normal pledge/bill. So, while ideally this would only affect users who subscribe through the iOS app, apparently Apple made it clear that if anyone using their app was on unsupported subscription models (I.E. the one we are currently on, billing at the start of every month) that the entire app would be rejected.

They're going to switch us over eventually, and I have the option to delay it, but since they will force us there eventually anyway I figure it's best to just let them switch us to Subscription billing in November. This means that new pledges will have the option to start their subscription on any day of the month, and will be charged proceeding months on the same day.

Currently pledges can continue their pledge on the 1st of every month if they desire, and I won't be making any changes to the schedule I roll out content on, nor the schedule I release passwords on.

TL;DR:
-Users subbing through Apple iOS Patreon app will see an additional charge (reflecting Apple's new fee).
-Apple is forcing Patreon to force all creators to switch to a subscription billing model. This means eventually we are going to have to switch to subscription billing.
-Subscription billing just means you can sub on any day of the month and be re-billed on the same date next month, as opposed to all billing occurring on the 1st.

P.S.:
If anyone has any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to raise them. If anyone has a serious objection to switching to subscription billing please let me know (although Patreon will still force us there eventually). I'm willing to delay the switch for a little while if enough people raise considerable concerns surrounding the move.

Comments

I'm still not sure what Apple is getting at with all this (profit?? Nahhh xD) but if anyone has subbed using the Apple iOS Patreon app, it seems like it would be best to just sub through the website directly.
