The mound erupted from the ground overnight – its hulking mass of black feces hardening into a fortified hill under the heat of the sun. Towering over 60 feet above the ground, the crude structure devoured the small church once standing on the site.
Below the mound, underground lies a fungal cellar blanketed wall-to-wall with flesh-eating fungus and decaying molds. Used to sustain the brood colony within the mound, any organic matter left in the cellar quickly breaks down and used by the brood to expand.
Above the fungal cellar, right at ground level is the entrance hall of the church, its walls buckled and deformed from the brood mound. Dog-sized tunnels are carved out allowing various exits as well as ventilation for the resident colony.
Sagging above the entrance hall is the royal chambers, an expansive catacomb of brood nests. Lining the dung-encrusted walls and ceilings are scores of brood eggs, fluttering with new life. To the right of the smaller chambers lies the queen’s chamber – a massive vaulted room that allows the brood queen to battle invaders and suitors as they come.
