First Script I Ever Wrote

This was my very first script, the first one I recorded, and the first one I uploaded. It was kinda cringy but I had to start somewhere :) Anyway, enjoy.

Sounds needed: Fire, Rain, Thunder

"Hey, you good? Idk you... passed out on me for a minute there.

Pause

No, don't worry about it, I mean. We're all tired. There's two of us as lookouts for a reason.

Pause

Do you... want to talk about something? Keep each other awake? I know I could use it. I'm half asleep already. And we've got hours before we can wake them up to relive us. What should we talk about? Any deeply traumatic experiences you feel like sharing?

Laugh.

Come on. That's what we're supposed to do, right? Two soldiers, watching over the group by a dying fire. It's not like we could talk about anything normal like... i don't know the weather or anything. Don't laugh at me! You know I'm right. But I guess stereotypes had to come from somewhere, right?

Pause

Sigh

So, who were you? Don't give me that. You know what I mean. Before all this, the war. Who were you?

Pause

Could you be vaguer? Fine, don't tell me. I was just trying to make conversation.

Pause

Hmm? Oh, you want me to answer? Really and why would I tell you when you won't tell me? I have slightly more pride than that. My depressing backstory will come out in time. That's how it works, isn't it?

Pause

Do you ever get tired of it all?

Pause

No, not like that. I don't mean physically tired, we all get that just... like you know you have to survive and protect everyone but... never mind it's dumb anyway. I'm just rambling.

Pause

I guess I mean. I don't know. I'd give a lot just to be safe for a night. Not to worry about the team or waking up to something that's trying to kill me. To be able to put the gun in the car instead of by my bed.

Yeah, a good night's sleep. I feel like that would just... solve everything.

Should I build up the fire again? Or just let it go out? It could get cold if I let it go out. Hmm? Yeah, I guess we can wait for the changing of the guards or whatever. It'll give them something to do to wake them up, at least.

Fire Sounds

What? Oh, yeah, my arm. Nearly forgotten about it. No yeah, it hurts. I'm just high on pain meds right now. What? Oh, shut up. I've been teased enough for grabbing those pills, but we'll see who's laughing when one of you breaks a leg and has to walk on it.

Hm? No, I'm not going to save them. I'll take as many as I want to make any pain go away.

Angry

So, what the group might need them! They laughed at me when I took them from that doctor's office. They laughed, hear me? Said there were more important drugs to carry around than painkillers.

I don't care that someone might get hurt!  If someone gets hurt and I have some to spare, then they're more than welcome to them. We're a team, we share. But I'm not going to be in pain waiting for someone else to be in pain. And why are you so concerned all of a sudden? I know that when we found you, you wouldn't even share food or water with us.

Pause

Mocking

Didn't trust you, I didn't trust you! Sure. Sure, kid. Because you trust any of us now.

Pause

Well, you shouldn't. You should be skeptical of everyone. At least, everyone except me. You're stuck with me so you might as well trust me. Your part of my team now, so you might as well get used to it. I've very... protective of the people under my watch.

Pause

Oh, you noticed that. Yeah, I do sleep, thank you. I just usually take a watch or two before passing out. And I wake up a couple times during the night to check on whoever's on guard. No, I do sleep! In bits. It's all I need, alright?

Pause

Do you want to talk about it?

Don't play dumb with me. That's a game you can't win. It's the look on your face. The trying not to have a look on my face look. See, you're doing it right now!

Yes, you are!

We're going to be here a while so you might as well tell me. Did you lose someone? Hmm? Fine, don't tell me. I'll just sit here and guess.

Of course, you lost someone, everyone's lost someone. Someone you cared about or... someone you pretended not to care about? No, I've got it. Someone you didn't know you cared about until you lost them. Is that it?

Pause

Have you ever thought about what happened to them.

What will happen to us...? When we die? Do you... believe in a god or an afterlife or anything?

Pause

Laugh

Hey, I told you. Late night campfire talks always get the deepest. Especially in the face of impending doom. It's unavoidable.

Pause

I like to think there's a god. Though, it would be nice if He'd show up once and a while. But it's comforting to think there's something holding this whole garbage dump of a world together.

Pause

Do you think its easier or harder, doing everything alone? I know it sounds random but... all this talk of loss. It would hurt less if you didn't care about anyone. But that's a pretty lonely life. Which one do you think is better? Or are both of them awful.

Pause

Yeah.

No yeah, I get it.

Not sure I agree with all of that but... yeah. I see your point.

Thunder

Gasp

Yeah, I know, I heard it, too. We'll be protected underneath this ruined building, but man. It was hard enough walking through a ruined city. It'll be even harder walking tomorrow through muddy ruined city.

Pause

Hey, don't swear, there are kids. Yeah, I know they're sleeping, but still.

Pause

I do not look worried. We'll make it to the community just fine, wait and see. I've never lost a member of my group yet, and I don't plan to start today.

Pause

No, I'm serious. I'm the only posse leader who hasn't lost a single person.

17 round trips to the city and back to the community, and not a single loss. We've had our fair share of injuries, sure, but everyone has gotten to the community alive. You will too. Just wait.

Thunder

Pause

Oh, it doesn't seem possible to you? Wow, so much faith in your posse leader. Why do you think all these people follow me, huh? Why do you think you're here? Because it's safe, that's why. I make things safe.

How?

Basic knowledge, keeping everyone safe, staying away from thieves and dangerous buildings and...

Oh. yeah. I guess you're right. Every posse leader knows that stuff.

So why am I different?

Quieter.

I... I don't really know. I'm not, I don't think. I just... I can't stand to lose anyone.

Confidently

That's it, I think. Other leaders will let one-member die for the sake of the group. I just... won't. I can't. So, I have to protect everyone.

Pause

You were a posse leader? Really?

Pause

What happened? Did... did you lose someone?

Pause

I'm sorry. Hey... hey. Are... you ok?

Pause

Rain

Sigh

And there's the rain.

Pause

Can I sit by you?

It gets better. I know you don't want to hear it, I know it doesn't feel like it and I know its over said. But it does. It hurts less eventually. And not just when you take pain killers.

Laugh

But hey, they don’t hurt, right?

Laugh

If I promise not to fall asleep, can I rest my head on your shoulder?

What, no. Pfft. No, I just... my head hurts, that's all.

It does get... better. It hurts for a while, sure. I don't think it ever really stops but... you do learn to live. To survive, at least.

And that's the important thing... right?
