I don't want to simply retell Foto Finish's story when it comes to young Franzie Becker, not least for the fact that Liz created that story (credit where it's due).
So, when things started to go to shit in Dachau, Leonie Becker and her kitten fled to northwest Pennsylvania. While Leonie was at work, little Franzie would hang out at Presque Isle. She would run afoul of bullies even in this happy place, and eventually they would brutalize her, siting antisemitic excuses.
Luckily the kids weren't super good at murdering, and a partially-blinded Franzie would be rescued by a helpful park ranger. Knowing they were less likely to experience justice and more likely to get more of the same, Leonie and Franzie fled again, this time to California.
It has been expressed to me that, in the aftermath of WW2, Jewish survivors were often blamed for their own persecution. If they REALLY didn't want to be wiped out they would have fought harder, or some similar garbage reasoning. I feel like the kid with the knife had a soldier parent who returned wounded from the war, and it's all due to having to protect you weaklings, etc etc.
