Double Picking Part 2, Patreon Exclusive!!!

Just for you guys!!!

So you've mastered the basics I showed you in the Still of the Night video I posted earlier, and now you're hungry for more? I've got you covered!! In this video, I've got some recommendations on what to learn to take your double picking to the next level. Grab the TABs below and hop aboard!

(I totally forgot to include Oblivion by Mastodon in the video! Whoops.... but I put the verse riff in the tab, too, that's an essential one to learn!!!)

Thanks again, y'all. Gimme your favorite double picked riffs in the comments section!

You know, with Mastodon and Lamb of God doing their Ashes of the Leviathan tour this year, it could be cool to see a video/retrospective compilation on guitar work we should look for when they play those albums live.

Skyes has used dbl picking in tons of his WS and BM stuff... "You're gonna break my heart again" "Billy"... his solo in "Please Don't Go" with Thin Lizzy... great stuff... and very tough!

Nick Castelluccio

Spealing of themes, I remember the Power Rangers was kinda rockin' Here's one version.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lhRsFHTvxc Also, why is this lesson so damn awkward. I thought it would be easy but my fingers turned into pickles trying to play this properly. Ugh. Gotta slow down... a lot. Thanks Ben, your lessons have really helped me out.

Loving the double-picking tips! By the way, your "Oops, I forgot Oblivion" moment was probably the most metal thing ever – the best riffs are too hardcore to be confined to just one video, right? Can't wait for a Tremolo picking lesson, count me in! Keep shredding, maestro!

KOF Gear

In little wing near the end of the verses

Dylan

I always think of Fight Fire with Fire from 'tallica

Rude Mood!!!! Great call, I should have thought of that one!

Ben Eller

oh man, yeah!!! And you're correct, that's Doug alright!

Ben Eller

Love Mastadon! Different genre, but SRV’s Rude Mood was the first double picked riff that came to mind.

One of my favorites is the brief lead intro of The Transformers from the 1986 movie done by Doug Aldrich (I think) in Lion. Hearing this theme in the theater when I was 7 is a core memory. I credit it to setting me on a path of heavy music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaVcpfncOWs

Joe Olivas

Another good one even if it’s a 4-2-4-2 pattern not 2-2-2-2 pattern is the intro from Nevermore’s seed awakening https://youtu.be/1F0Hnz8Yryg?si=fn0gojNGma3XuyOR

Very true. Totally forgot that one. I just know I tried Living Dead Beat and was like holy shit this is hard, so it’s stuck with me.

I started learning Dream Theater’s “Never Enough” last weekend before you posted any of this and it’s got a great double picked portion of the solo.

And for even more insanity there’s Alexi Liaho’s living dead beat https://youtu.be/ivGFlTiT3BE?si=YeCkGQGPtQ9zYn_X and Mask of Sanity https://youtu.be/U0tAueX4tmE?si=1VcP75KDCaS0NbCC
