2022-04-06 07:05:38 +0000 UTCDean /was/ dead. Had he refused the reaper's offer, he'd simply develop into a vengeful spirit; she was never going to force him, but she hoped to grant time to make the "right" choice. As in, he'd become the thing he hunts, possibly hurt or even kill others while, sure, maybe the machines might be able to keep the organs functioning. Guess it depends on how you define a living thing since that body would continue circulating air, require nutrients and expel the leftovers... only there'd be nothing inside. As for Sam, pft. I was dying throughout cos he was sooo obnoxiously pushy and he does have this terrible habit of pushing and pushing 'til he gets someone to speak. To be fair, turns out Dean wasn't doing A or B ( using the hunt to get out of his head nor deflecting intentionally ) -- it's just, he saw a case coincidentally around the same time he would have used something else to avoid dealing with his emotions. He's a hunter and it's his job. That said, he clearly has been acting this way for some offscreen time as well so eventually someone will call someone on clamming down and acting erratically, or in any way that is uncharacteristically negative to their own well-being. I can't totally call Dean's method of coping, uh... coping. Well, until he actually aired his fears and stressors. Of course, they each have their flaws. While Sam tries wayyyy too hard to get his brother to talk from time to time, Dean basically shuts Sam down when he tries to speak about his own feelings on matters that affect them both. Invalidates them and mocks him for even feeling them. He's hurting so he strikes out with anger at the ones closest to him 'til /he/ feels like talking. That's unfortunate for everyone involved, especially Dean. It's such a relief to see him finallyyyy peek out of the safety of his self-imposed isolation. He can only grow from here.

2018-12-08 07:18:54 +0000 UTCI agree with pretty much everything you said. Not the most interesting episode but it was a way for Dean to finally bubble over and share how he was really feeling with Sam. I think like Sam said, it was getting to the point where he was finding Dean to be scary when hunting and if he continued to let it go, it could've very well got Dean or even himself killed. Like you've said a few times, they balance each other out very well. Sam is more likely to talk about how he is feeling but Dean is more likely to try and hide it and pretend that he's ok even though it is obvious to Sam that he isn't and I think that frustrates Sam because he just wants to help and they are obviously going through the same thing. I love the ending scene. Jensen is an amazing actor and does such an amazing job of making Dean look so broken and vulnerable and Jared's reaction to that is awesome too. I love that Sam is obviously concerned but he looks very awkward and uncomfortable too, like he wanted Dean to talk about it but now he is talking about it, he doesn't quite know how to react.

2018-12-08 01:15:48 +0000 UTCI have never liked this episode, because when I first watched it was deathly afraid of zombies. lol But then I made myself watch The Walking Dead (because so many people said it was amazing ) which, funnily enough, made me get over my fear. So this time around, not so bad... lol Also, I agree with Dean. He was definitely dead. He just hadn't moved on yet. His anger with the girl, the boy and the girl's father in this episode by saying, "What's dead should stay dead!" was in reference to his own feelings about his dad sacrificing himself for him. Seeing this really brought home how absolutely angry Dean has been, how guilty he has been feeling... and I'm so glad he finally admitted it to Sammy. He needed to get it off his chest. Sammy knew it. Dean knew Sammy knew it... Those boys love each other so much. There's nothing they wouldn't do for each other. Love this show! So glad you're loving it as well.

2018-12-07 11:37:47 +0000 UTCYay! This is the one I was looking forward to. I agree that it's a weak episode, but it was the end that is why. It's the first time we really see Dean full on let go and open up about his feelings. It's been leaking out a bit here and there a couple times during season 1 and 2, but this is finally the time he actually does it for real. And with his brother, of course. Sammy is his weak spot and can reach him when maybe others can't. This is also the first time Jensen is really able to show how good he is at the tear making and heart breaking. He's just really good at getting into a scene so totally that he gets lost in it. True. This ended up being pretty a pretty emotional scene for the actor as well as the character. He had to go walk it off a bit after they yelled "cut". About the rest of the episode. I agree with most of your thoughts on this episode. I don't think it's considered a very good one by many fans. And the best parts are related to what the boys are going through. I agree that Sam seems to be pushing Dean maybe too hard. My opinion on that is that it is partly because Sam needs to have Dean talk about it, to help himself deal. And also to maybe take his mind off of his own suffering. I think he feels better when he's consoling someone else - or he helps himself by helping them. Does that make sense? Also debatable is whether Dean was "dead" or not. His spirit had left his body. The Reaper just hadn't taken it yet. If Dean hadn't been fighting the Reaper he would have been taken long before John made the Deal. Tessa even said that he wasn't getting back into his body, whether he went with her or not. So he could have been Brain Dead. His body wanted to shut down. Was going to if John hadn't made that deal. So, there's no way Dean would have lived other than John making that deal. And it breaks my heart to see Dean like this because, like you said, Dean is the smart alec, making jokes and all that. Is that Dean gone now? Some of that is totally genuine - wanting to have fun when, and while, you can. And I think some of it is to mask how he really feels - or to maybe help get his mind off how he really feels. I don't know. It's all debatable.
