Jared and Jensen, and several other people including Eric Kripke, appeared at PaleyFest during the first season and when asked about their favorite scenes so far, everyone gave thoughtful, deep answers. Then Kripke answered that the guy getting his hand eaten was his favorite scene. He's such a little shit! And fandom loves him for it.

It's also where we start to see the show changing its focus. The most important things are not the monsters, but the brothers and their story. That "sorry" from Mary Winchester to Sam. One of the great mysteries. You'll get the answer... eventually. And what is John doing? Again, answers on a postcard, please! I still get a little teary at that phone call from Dean to John. Jensen is so brilliant in the emotional scenes. Most of us break eventually!

Just in case you're still a little confused, Sam & Dean had never been back to their childhood home until this episode and since it has been 20 years since she has died, that means that not long after the fire, John took Sam & Dean and left. The next episode is the mid-season finale.
