2023-11-21 19:23:32 +0000 UTCAlso, re “Nazi Maoists” during the Years of Lead- I think the ANR specifically used Maoism as a form of misdirection. One of their best known “false flag” operations was putting up Maoist posters for a fake far left revolutionary group. They did this because, at the time, Maoism was not popular in Italy- so they wanted to scare the public enough to provoke a policy backlash (and/or draw people to a fake group to commit provocation operations.) I don’t think they knew anything about actual Maoism, but in their racist orientalist view, the symbol of Maoism provided shock value (like internet edgelords today.) There’s a good series about this by “Radio War Nerd”- the show Rey was guested on about the Serbian Red Berets (which is what brought me to y’all’s podcast lol.)
