2023-08-21 08:10:47 +0000 UTCIt’s worth noting that a “balk” is actually the name of a technical pitching error in ML baseball. If you fuck your throw badly enough, the umpire allows the folks on base to take a base (the count remains the same, so it doesn’t count as a strike or ball.) Thanks to modern coaching, balks are pretty rare- it’s a big fuck up if a pitcher gets called for one in the pros. Long story short, these so called “nationalists” who fetishize white American identity named their political camp after a relatively uncommon, humiliating error in their national sport. Much like the panel itself, a “balk” is characterized by unintentional incompetence- a solid metaphor for each of their respective PR efforts. Since the audience of MLB skews older, white, and more conservative, their respective target audiences are a lot more likely to notice the idiocy of the name “balk right” than randos. Go figure…
