157 - Blasphemous II (feat. Tom O’Mahony)

Tom O’Mahony (Beneath the Skin, Lions Led by Donkeys) and the lads grab their rosary blades and make for the miraculous city of Cvstodia as they cover The Game Kitchen’s gothic 2023 Metroidvania: Blasphemous II. Topics include the game’s Sevillian origins, the literal Piss-Christ, and the importance of gamifying Catholicism as a merciless, guilt-ridden bloodbath.

I like Jesus being my personal friend. I like how I can just talk to this regular, nice guy who also happens to be the absolute God. I don't want to have to make my way through bureaucracy and some corrupt old dudes who think they're better than me just to get what I need. Also, it's a damn good thing I'm a nihilist.

I am Catholic and I’m here for the religious discourse and humor. This game has so much thought into it. also my family is Irish, so Tom’s accent is making this even more enjoyable and funny for me. I love it when AJ finds an excuse to break out his weird Gregorian chant!

You guys got me to buy this and The Last Faith my first Metroidvania since my childhood

Kyle Reesman

really fantastic ep, this is one of my favorite games and listening made me want to replay it!

Even though I grew up around Catholics-aren't-christians reformed hardliners, these two games really resonate with the impact they had on me. It's the imagery and the worldbuilding obviously, these aesthetics remind me of housewives and middle managers chatting about being washed in blood like it's the weather. But it's also in the gameplay, particularly the traversal - Blasphemous 1 in particular feels so burdensome to play, the penitent one moves so slowly and falls so heavily. The emotional experience of the gameplay reminds me of how I felt back when I thought if I snuck a piece of candy I'd have to answer to the guy who carved the grand canyon

Elah

Have you considered covering Fear and Hunger, specifically the second game Termina? I feel like the religious themes are similar to those explored in Blasphemous and fertile ground for discussion

Josh is the only reader in the group

Jimmy McMillan

You are both correct, Dark Souls 2 is the best one!!

Virginia Paine

Curious if any of you have read A Canticle For Leibowitz. More post-apocalyptic sci-fi than dark fantasy but it's another super interesting exploration/twisting of Catholicism. One of my favorite novels and I'd be interested to hear your thoughts!

Plus oneing it has a lot to say about the creativity that birthed the games industry in the 80s, the meta narrative threads between games, the hints to the relationships between those who made the games

S-lappin

Darkest Dungeon?

Kyle Reesman

That would make Jason secretly based, which I'm dubious of

Oh ye heretical DS2 enjoyers Hbomberguy hath poisoned your souls Repent, lest ye incur Miyazaki's wrath, the developer of the one true Souls

It is always good when the Protestant Work Ethic is foiled. Foiling the Protestant Work Ethic justifies all means. Anti-Protestant Work Ethic Aktion

I know they've got plans enough for the next few years but I'd love to hear the boys talk about UFO 50 even if it were a ladscast episode. Just hearing which games they each connected with.

Dergon

this game basically sounds like it was created by the mirror universe catholic version of jason whittaker

Max Johansson

Sin is stored in the peen, that's why it's the Peenitent movement.

Dergon

but actally tho this episode is wild to me cuz since that game induces an lsd like state ive never been able to take it as a critique of catholicism im just like "well it feels like this normally brackets good so whats the problem" lmao

Lain of the Wired

Hooting and stamping at the mention of a future Metal Gear episode.

BarFly

Blasphemous is great cuz it's just how temporal lobe epilepsy feels lol

Lain of the Wired

The vibe of this game is very "what if Berserk was very Catholic"

Noblesse Oblahaj

I grew up in the town where Team 17 are based. When I was in secondary school they provided a number of work experience places to our year 11s (age 15-16). Needless to say those places were massively over-applied for.

Regular Sized Horse (Small)

As a fellow autist, sometimes I love how much I understand your ultra-specific cultural references by heart and sometimes it makes me loathe myself. The first 60 seconds of this episode (Dream of a Fisherman's wife) made me loathe myself.

John Her

Excited to see Tom on the pod
