2022-08-16 12:58:50 +0000 UTCTo Josh’s point about “charity cases” - an ugly phrase for an ugly phenomenon - retroactively something that sticks out to me about Odyssey is how it replicates that dynamic. Poverty, even being on the visibly lower end of the middle class, is uncommon and always an aberration in Odyssey, and so often those characters fall into glurgy patterns of redemption stories where improving their morality and changing their class character are inextricable. To me this clearly mirrors the attitudes and fantasies wealthier congregations tend to harbor towards their lower-class members.
