aaaaand here's the second "augmented reality" reference video from AdeptiCon 2023!
Here you'll find a real time example of a quick, intuitive "alla prima" approach using only fully opaque oil paints (the easiest to manage when you start playing with oils coming from acrylics)!
The paint is used straight from the tubes, with its original oil content and high density, adding just a drop of white spirit when I find a consistency that totally stops the spring of the brush;
The only exception is the initial "wash", meant to stain the canvas and establish the deepest shadows, that needs a bit of extra fluidity to be quickly applied everywhere and enter into the smallest, deepest crevices, but still, it's way thicker than you may think.
The real, game changing trick is to always use microscopic quantities of paint because oils have an incredible covering power and the idea is to stretch the concentrated dot of paint into a smooth blend so you have to understand the balance between dimensions of the surface/quantity of paint/fading of the blend or shade that you have in mind!
In the class at the Con I went for a more essential, speed painting friendly 3 colours approach (one for the stain/deepest shadows, one for the mid values local tones, and one for the lights) but you can see from this video that you can introduce all the extra hues you want if you can manage the space and their colour theory relations!
Apply->blend->apply->blend... simple as that ;)
Enjoy!
