A Little Patreon Refresh/A Little Test of a New Perk!

It's time for the thing I've been talking about since... oh my god, 2022? I've been putting this off for 2 years?

Well, the long overdue PATREON REFRESH is finally here!

WHAT'S NEW?

Here's a list of the things I've changed:

Hello, it's Brian David Gilbert! The guy whose Patreon you just joined!
If you'd like to get caught up on the things I've been posting for the past few years, check out the Collections tab. It's the easiest way to scroll through certain perks and watch weird old bloopers that I probably shouldn't have been so willing to post online. Oh well, too late now!
Thank you so much for your support. You allow me to continue making whatever silly little creation pops into my head, and I cannot overstate how grateful I am that you allow me to do that. Thank you thank you thank you. That's three thank yous in a row, so you know it's legitimate.

WHAT'S GOING AWAY?

I'm sad to say that I'm stopping the monthly livestreams for the $5 and $10 tiers. I had so much fun making them with you all, and I hope you had a wonderful time watching them, too!

There are a couple reasons for this change: First, the streams became a bit difficult to schedule, especially when they needed extra set up before going live, or if the month was extra busy.

Second, they're not super popular! That has been great for the streams—we've had a lot of fun with smaller games, and doing absurd karaoke streams—but I think my time might be better served on benefits that you all might like more! And that's the purpose of the video on this post!

WHAT'S THE NEW PERK?

It's Brian Brecommends! Like, Brian Recommends, but with a B in front of recommends. Please help me find a better name than that. It's a monthly video that all paid subscribers will have access to!

There are two parts of this monthly video. In the first part, I talk about a piece of media that I really loved from the past month, with an emphasis on things that inspire me, or smaller projects that I think deserve more attention. (This month is about Perfect Days, the new Wim Wenders film about the Tokyo Toilet Project!)

The second part will be a Q&A, where I answer any questions you might have for me! These can be about my work, or my hobbies, or my favorite brand of pickles (it's Grillo's Pickles). The sky's the limit. I always loved doing the Q&A portion during some livestreams, and I think this is a fun way to keep that alive!

(You can send these questions to me through a Patreon DM if you want to remain anonymous, or you can leave them in the comments of the post! And if no one sends in any, I'll just scroll through my YouTube comments to see if anyone has any questions for me. I'm sure that will go swimmingly.)

To stop me from talking for hours (and to make sure this doesn't cut into the work on my main channel), I've given myself a rule: I can only film for 10 minutes, and I can only edit it for 50 minutes.

This lets me do one of my favorite things: live-production, where I scramble to pull up the right images to talk about the thing I loved from the last month. Keeps it lovably hectic, and makes it easier for me to edit after the fact.

Let me know if you like this! And more importantly, let me know if you don't! So much of having a Patreon is making sure I'm spending my time on the things that make it worth being subscribed, so I truly want to know. In fact, this should be its own section.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD BE UPDATED?

Please let me know if there's ever anything that would make this Patreon more worthwhile to you!

I'm willing to give anything a try (within reason)! A podcast? Early releases of my videos? One BIG stream every couple of months? Or maybe just some standard, quality of life fixes?

For example, would you like me to upload an ad-free version of each main channel video here? I've had a couple people mention this, especially as YouTube crams more and more ads into every video. If you'd like this, let me know, and I can start putting up the ad-free versions alongside every blooper/behind-the-scenes video!

THAT'S IT!

For now, at least! I'll keep working on the perks in order to perfect the "time it takes to make" to "amount of patron enjoyment" ratio, so things might shift around in this early part of the year, but hopefully all for your benefit! Thanks again for sticking with me, and I can't wait to see where things go in 2024.

That said, on reflection I really enjoy your frequent updates by email. Knowing what you are up to (even if that's a whole bunch of pitching that you can't talk about) is a huge encouragement to continue my support. I work for a charity that helps individuals who are doing charitable work to build and maintain a team of financial and emotional supporters, and frequent updates (and personal interactions where possible) are absolutely key.

Claire Lovell

Please know that there's a lot of us who are happy to chip in without any perks, in support of your creative endeavours. Please don't stress, just give the whole world more BDG and we'll help! 🙏

Ida Juva

I follow you since your days on Polygon and I only have one question. Did you really read all the Books of Skirym and (specially) all the novels of Halo? You´re awesome!! Keep the good work.

Jon Zorita Leza

What is one thing about your partner that you adore? What is something you learned and it changed you in a fundamental way? What is a habit you would like to break/adopt? What is your favorite shirt? Is there a style you love vut don't think you can pull off?

Brittany Huckey

Do you use the top sheet? Do you wear socks when you are inside your house? Do you like fudgy or cakey brownies?when was the last time you made ice cream?what flavor was it? Is there a costume that you want to make, cosplay or renfaire or other? Have you gone to a renfaire? What did you think?

Brittany Huckey

I am so glad to hear you talk about media, especially lesser known things, like this! This sounds inspiring. And I love Brecommendations

Brittany Huckey

10min live and limited editing sounds like an awesome setup for you. Also, it is perfectly chaotic and quirky you. Which is why I am on your patreon.

Brittany Huckey

I would LOVE to see ad-free version of each main channel video here! YouTube is driving me up the wall with the ads and it would be great to be able to see your work without them :) Also loved Brian Brecommends!

Karis

You've probably heard it before, and I'm only a humble bold donation goofus, but enabling you to fulfill your calling to make wonderful things is a reward in itself. I just want to patronise the arts.

Claire Lovell

as a supporter, I support this

Cooper

I love this format!! A look at your process AND a recommendation to some BDG favorite media? It's a perfect nugget. Can't wait to check out Perfect Days (I just rewatched Soul in theaters, and I can not get enough of the "value is in the present moment of everyday life" theme) :)

Jason Smith

Thanks very much for getting it set up! If anyone's looking at this in the future, you can access chats on desktop by going into the community page linked in the sidebar menu and going into the chats tab. Come and hang out!

Well-Spoken Rambler

The new format is super cool - I love seeing your editing hijinks xD

Catrick

Seconding this! ^^

Catrick

Love the new format! I like the idea of streams, but never find the time to watch them. But I'm always looking for media Brecommendations, especially hidden gems. This is perfect for me! Thanks, Brian

Angela Dawson

I'm gonna miss the stream but definitely get why they're gone, i could barely join most of them and ended up watching them later. I think one big stream every few months is a great idea, it sounds like it would solve most of the problems with the streams and we wouldn't lose the fun things like game nights!

Hila SketchCat Shats

i think patron exclusive merch could be cool!

Nemesis_Slime

Since I live in Japan livestreams are almost never at a time I can watch, so while those sounded fun, I'm really excited for a Brian Brecommends I can watch at my own pace! (And I love the name)

Lauren Prince

Podcasts are just nice little cozy things for me, and I really enjoyed your appearance on the Sadboyz podcast, it was interesting to hear what was going on. If you wanted to do something like that (maybe with Karen) then I think it’d be a great extra! Obviously not required but nice to have.

Alex V

I'm so glad to hear Perfect Days was great! I saw the trailer and was really interested in it

joewidd

Also i have questions! How did you first get involved with dropout.tv? And would you ever be down to do a season of d20?

Cory!

I miss your old podcast! I'd love if you did another.

Cory!

500 Quatloos says he goes over time on every video. I know I would.

Gwen Sanger

Thanks for the update! Can we get early access to videos on YouTube please? I'm subscribed on there to goose the algorithm for you but it'd still be cool to get notifications about your full videos and see stuff early!

K. D. Bryan

If you liked Perfect Days, I really think you'd enjoy "Paterson" starring Adam Driver. It has a VERY similar vibe - it's kind of a slice of life movie following a NJ bus driver who writes in his spare time. It's beautiful, soft, quiet, and makes me feel like writing whenever I watch it. I think you'd like it.

APM

I always thought “Asking For a Friend” was a good q&a title.

Kristin Daniel

personally i would LOVE a podcast, but that's a lot of work and I wouldn't want you to burn out on "extras" rather than your main work!

Misha Grifka

Love the format and chaotic editing fun. Looking forward to more! Also, totally irrelevant to your questions but your outfit is spectacular.

Matthew Lavoie

Brian, it’s always refreshing to see you excited about a new way of doing things (I was so happy for you when you took December off; breaks are vital to creativity and it really shows when you’re passionate and creating for fun — not solely out of responsibility) and I love this style of video. It feels like catching up with a friend after not seeing them for a while, and like others commented I’m very excited to hear about what media you’re enjoying. I love finding new things and I trust your taste in these matters implicitly. I will be looking forward to these videos every month!! And have now marked February 7th on my calendar so I remember to see Perfect Days asap. :)

Jessie Pomegranate

I think brian brecommends is a perfect name actually

minecraft frog

Anything you want to share is what I will take, and since I hate when I receive that same feedback from people I know it’s not helpful. So, I enjoyed the video you shared and seeing more of the process. I think the best part of this Patreon is your connection to us and true desire to know what we want or to help inform/educate us and share new things. So keep up the amazing work you do in all things 😊

Ray Ellen

Love the live-producing, it brings me back to the old Gill&Gilbert days.

Natalie Smyk

Very good point! I just updated the post with links to the trailer and websites I visited, and I'll be sure to include a bibliography in future posts!

Brian David Gilbert

Like I assume most folks here, I'm along for the ride no matter what you're producing at the end of the day. I would love to hear a podcast because I enjoy smart people in long form conversations, but it's all down to the amount of time you have.

shaboogen

continuing Thirdlies would be grand!

rionsanura

The new perk is fun! One suggestion, if the thing you talk about in it is linkable (like the videos you showed this time), it would be nice to have that linked in the post as well

Rin

I think ad-free videos in the same post as the bloops would be stellar! Also Brian Brecommends as a title is exactly what I'd expect from you lol and you shouldn't change it even for something more clever or roll-off-the-tongue-y. Clearly I'm not an expert on roll-off-the-tongue-y phrases though.

bird mullet

Tokyo Toilet Project is one of the best things to happen to Shibuya. Can confirm. 😅

Nicholas La Roux

Love the video and hearing your perspective on a film I've not heard of!

Bridget Haley

Of your suggestions, I would love to see a big stream every few months (keep doing thirdly reports maybe??)! I always love when I can pop into your streams, they're a lot of fun :D Excited for these new updates, Brian Brecommends is a great perk omg Also of course I would love a podcast but only if that felt sustainable for you!!

Amber Miller

p.s. IT'S NOT AN AMPHIBIOUS KEYBOARD. WE'VE BEEN THROUGH THIS

rionsanura

Oh God I'm begging for a podcast. Ever since LMAM I've been dying to hear you ramble again.

Nate Matthews

This will likely get me to upgrade. Live streams are hard to schedule around! Cheers Brian, you rock!

Darren Harvey

Recommendations are such a great idea! That was always a question I had when the Q&A times came, so I am very pleased to be able to see them in a fun little constraint-based video! You were inconceivably generous with your time for the monthly streams at both tier levels and I will continue to treasure those vods because they were hella fun. I'd be jazzed if an every-once-in-awhile stream occurred, maybe with a longer run-up warning for potentially greater attendance, when you have more downtime (every couple months seems ambitious, but we all know you've never been short on ambition). Generally, though, I am just glad to be able to contribute my little sliver to the peace of mind I wish for you: let the perks be what they will! I'm hype for whatever you wanna do!

rionsanura

Deeply saddened to hear of the ending of the monthly streams. I couldn’t always make it, but when I did it was usually the highlight of my week. It was a real privilege to be part of them while they lasted.

Alex Derbe

big tub of grillo's pickles >>>

Maia

This is a great idea! I believe the new community chat function can only work through the phone app at the moment, but I'll start a quick "Patron Creations" chat right now!

Brian David Gilbert

extremely good effort-to-entertainment ratio, thanks Brian

supercres

Had a feeling the monthly streams might be on their way out and, while they will be missed, it works better if you feel like your time is better served and more folks can appreciate what this place has to offer! If I had one suggestion, it would be using a new Patreon feature to try and replace one which we just lost - a Patreon Chat in lieu of the beloved community tab which got removed over December-time. In truth, it was mainly just a place where I liked to see people’s sporadic arts and crafts (not even related to you per se) but it was still fun and it will be something I miss. If there could be a replacement of that in some form it’d be majorly appreciated but I also get that it may come with other features and side effects which are less desirable.
