Universe League EP 1 - DISCUSSION

Universe League EP 1 - DISCUSSION

loved that you acted like you were also a mentor having your 1pick

Alex

I also just want to appreciate how nice it is for the show to have a smaller number of contestants, I love my AHOF but I would have been happy with about 20 different contestants making the lineup by the end

I think they made a real misstep with how they initially tried to push Chihen, his charm really comes in later when they drop that and everyone realises he's a sweet little introverted weirdo Park Han became an immediate ult for me. Thats my guy I love him so much. The quality of his voice is incredible and no one has really clicked that quickly for me based on voice alone other than Theo from piwon

Okay, getting into more thoughts about this show. I was talking to a friend I frequently watch survival shows with about how UL differs from the usual MNet model (especially Produce/Planet series) for auditions and comparing it to the American competition shows we grew up watching. Namely America Idol vs The Voice as the closest comparison. MNet employs the American Idol model of: huge cast of contestants (many of which you know are just fodder), basic staging and sound so everything seems more "raw", and they also feel the need to include bad/joke auditions for the sake of drama or humor. Whereas Universe League takes some inspiration from The Voice model: less contestants (feels like they start at post-1st elimination of other survival shows), fancier staging and sound to feel like a more polished performance though that may mean they seem less authentic to some, no outright terrible performances taking up time and space, of course the whole Director teams concept. So both have pros and cons, not saying one is better than the other, just a matter of preference. As someone who has seen (and yes, enjoyed) many many MNet produced shows and am fully aware of all their usual TV antics, I felt like UL was a breath of fresh air. No huge overblown interpersonal issues, no evil editing. Okay, people will argue about the Woongki/Kyungho edit being one but I honestly think it's not. Just a real storyline (that they obviously push for TV ofc), but it's dramaTIC, not dramA if you get my distinction. Also important, no overt bias against non-Korean trainees that you usually see on an MNet show. I think having WayV as directors probably was a big factor in shaping that. Foreigners were not 'othered', they were treated like just another trainee same as everyone else. Of course I have issues with certain aspects of the show format (once you get into the Intercept round I have WORDS to say lol), but no show is perfect.

it's my first time watching this show, at first I wasn't interested but then I saw Changsub as the director so yes here I am. 😂 I'm also not getting the Chih En deal (but I also didn't get the whole Chuei Li Yu thing from B2p neither) just not my type I guess BUT I LIKED MICKY YOOCHUN BEFORE lol. and after hearing your take on this show I can't wait to watch your street woman fighter reaction 😏

tamkan

I also felt the same way with Chih en at first but he did slowly grow on me once Ahof debuted😆

Too pristine. Too perfect

Jet

man i can’t get not getting the chihen hype he kenta and jungwoo are the prettiest guys on this show fr, his eyes are so nice 😭 but yeah skills wise it’s still leaving stuff to be desired

I’m hoping cus TEAM BEAT took a BEATdown in these beginning matches.

Jet

Im so excited for the Original song rounds. PD will have such a roller coaster of opinions on Chi en or when PD discovers Kairi. Urgh. I’m gonna be EATING GOOOD. As a Woonggi & Kairi fan & a Team Beat Supporter! TEAM BEAT SONGS ARE SOOOO GOOD LIKE YRGHHH. EL CAPITXN PUT HIS BACK into themmm.

Wiktor

I swear the Chih En push is because of his face card

IT’S HEREEEE. AAAAAAHHHHHHHH 🫨 we have very similar standouts, PD! mine were: Han, JL, woongki, kyungho and jeongwoo—each for very different reasons. Han’s my one-pick 🥹 crazy to think that this was his very first performance on stage. he rly ticked all the boxes for me this episode. same for JL! what an all-rounder 😮‍💨 100% agree that these two are the strongest players thus far. woongki’s kind of an odd case for me. objectively, i know he’s very skilled and very charming. but i feel like he doesn’t blend in with a group very easily. his style is so distinctly woongki that it always stands out—both in a good and bad way. their concept for this round worked in his favour though and suited him really well. and nobody can deny that he’s such a hard-worker who wants this rly, rly badly, and i can’t help but root for him. as for kyungho…. something about his performance just felt very charismatic and magnetic to me. and jeongwoo—skill-wise, definitely on the lower level, BUT he has SO MUCH potential for star power, as you said. for someone with only 3-weeks’ training, he looked SO at ease on stage. and the camera just loves him. (fun fact: apparently, the guy got his college degree, got bored, enlisted in the military, finished serving, thought he’d give being an idol a shot, and somehow got here 😭 crazy life trajectory 😭 also!! the actor he reminds me of is park bogum!) my secondaries: joohyoung and juwon (these two are very veeery stable and charismatic on stage imo). and these are my third / contestants that have definitely caught my eye but haven’t got me fully convinced yet: jiangfan, steven, kenta, yuito. also, 100% agree with your take on Chih En! personally, i didn’t get the hype at all 😭—at least by this first episode. interestingly, the producers seem to push for him a lot and he gets really highlighted in the edits. anyhow, super excited for future episodes!! sooo many more contestants get to shine throughout the show, PD! you’re in for a ride 🥹

Thankfully, we don't have to wait long! One of my FAVORITE things about UL is that they go right into original songs early and from then on it's ONLY original songs.

Aine

i cannot wait for the original songs this show as they are all so good. How we managed to get JL, Park Han and Woongki all in the same small survival show i don't know
