Getting to the point where I don't remember what happens in the show! I really love this match bc as you said it's a battle of two strong teams with different philosophies of how to win at volleyball. One thing that I haven't seen mentioned that I appreciate about Haikyuu is its subtle commentary on socioeconomic class. The most striking examples are how Nekoma and Karasuno are the ally cats and crows at the "dumpster battles," which doesn't sound much like a compliment. Compare those teams to Shiritorizawa or Aoba Josei, who have multiple gyms, buses, cheering squads, multiple coaches, etc. It's a stark contrast. We also see it when Hinata is described as "from the concrete" or a place that isn't hospitable for growth. In contrast, Shiritorizawa is a fertile land with many resources to cultivate their skills. The class division is also apparent in the distances teams have to travel. Hinata has to ride his bike a long ways to get to school and Karasuno needs to take a bus and get an invitation to join the Tokyo training camps. Regular Tokyo schools would have a much easier time finding teams to challenge to practice matches without disrupting their student obligations as well. I think you can also see the class divide in the play philosophies between Shiritorizawa and Karasuno. Karasuno barely had enough members for a team (with some substitutes for pinch serving and injuries), so they had to be creative and learn to fight, strategize, and innovate with who they have. Shiritorizawa and Aoba Josei for example, are established powerhouses (i.e. historically well funded) who have a large pipeline of talented middle school players who want to attend those schools specifically for the vb clubs so they can be picky about taking those with the best skills or physical builds. This is all very applicable to real-life high school vb. I went to a less wealthy public high school that was only in its 4th year of having a varsity vb team. Many of our students were POC, and volleyball was not popular in our school district. The schools with good vb teams were those who were (are) traditionally wealthy, where the students can afford to pay thousands to play on travel volleyball teams in the off-season. I really related to Karasuno in high school because our team was up and coming, on the short side, and always trying new plays and such. We even had a similar loss to the Aoba Josei match in the semifinals, haha. All in all, Haikyuu is very near and dear to me given I started playing the sport bc of the anime and ended up being admitted into college as a vb recruit! Glad I was able to get caught up--thanks for the reactions as always!!
