NEW EPISODE! 066 — The Rats

BEST. POSSIBLE. COVER IMAGE. I have to admit, ever since I read 1984 (a wonderfully dystopian love story, and I will fight anyone about that), I've had a bit of a Thing about rats. I mean, rats are quite smart and cute and clean, but when they swarm or they're hungry? The cuteness turns to sheer horror. "Do it to Julia!" Or, you know, don't. However, I have a soft spot for rats because the local university's neuroscience section tests things on them, but black and white lab rats are a different matter from the infamous denizens of New York subways. I should also mention that I live in the only "rat free" zone in the world (Alberta--http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2003/03/0331_030331_rats.html) and that as a result, I've seen a rat in the wild only once. It was very dark, but the grey thing in the gutter did not look or move like the more familiar local ground squirrels... That said, here is a rat-related recommendation that people might enjoy: The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, by Sir Terry Pratchett. Although it's a YA book, it's dark, funny, short, and very smart. This was my introduction to Discworld and it's an entirely fine standalone. It also covers the gamut of both adorableness and horribleness among ratkind.
