Zombie Exodus: Aftermath, scene 16

Continued from scene 15

“I think we should just approach them and ask for help. It’s too dangerous otherwise, and they look like normal people who are probably friendly,” you say.

Jesse’s eyes go wide, and her face flushes in anger. “Are you out of your mind? You’re just assuming two people we meet in the middle of nowhere are friendly? Fooling around with Portland got your head all in the clouds if you think for one moment…” Jesse covers her mouth and acts like she’s screaming in her hand. When she is finished, she points a finger at you. “If you want to go talk to the lovebirds over there, you can do it alone. I’ll stay back and watch. If it goes bad, I’ll do what I can to help you. Are you sure about this?”

“Yeah, I’m sure. Promise me you won’t try to rob them while I have them distracted.”

Jesse jerks her head back and wears a look of surprise. “What? I…you think?” Her eyes look past you at the couple and then she grits her teeth and says, “Fine. I won’t rob them. I hate you.”

“Yeah, I love you too.”

As you start to walk past her, Jesse grabs your arm. “If anything goes wrong or you get a bad vibe, run past this way. I got your back.”

You give her a fist bump and then head through the clearing. As you move closer to the couple who are still bickering, you raise your hands to appear nonthreatening and call out to them.

“Hello there. I’m coming over to talk to you two.”

The couple stops talking and look up at you. Steven’s head falls to his belt, and he feels for a gun or weapon that isn’t there. His eyes never leave you. Serena adopts a more friendly expression and waves to you. “Hello! Wow, I can’t believe someone else is out this far.” At the sound of her own words, her expression goes blank, and she turns and looks through the clearing like she’s searching for others.

You make it about five paces from them, and Steven holds up his hand, palm out. “Stop right there, please. No offense, but we don’t know you, and I can’t say I’m the most trusting type. Why don’t you stay there while we talk.”

You see him lean back like he wants to stand, but he remains seated. Serena whispers in his ear, and he shrugs and then says to you, “You can’t be out here alone. Who else is with you?”
