Broken Legs, Organ Grinders... and Country Music? What a month!

Dearest Demons,

Where to start? This month's rewards are here and they are juicy! Prepare yourselves, you might need to make a cuppa...

ORGAN GRINDER

Right. How about we dive in with the new HVIRESS banger, featuring the mysterious and mystical Emberhoney? It's titled Organ Grinder.

This was originally a weird acoustic brass and double bass track made by Garry one night. He likes to stay up late, writing in our studio, and he calls these tracks "fannying about" (Scottish for "messing around" haha).

For HVIRESS, Hana and I like to take something random Garry's made, add our own synth parts/structure and take the track to the end with strings, vocals, keys, accordions, samples and yes, even more synths. Voila, a song is born. It's a very fun way to write.

This time around we just felt another voice from a fellow witch Taylor Madison Damian (aka Emberhoney) would just be the perfect fit.

(witching about together)

We drew inspiration from an amazing film Nightmare Alley (have any of you seen it?) for the storyline: Taylor plays a hypnotic fortune teller, Hana plays an evil ringmaster and me, well, I play the Fool who wandered too far into the wrong carnival... listen out for the maniacal laughter and terrified cries at the end ;)

(it's only available as an mp3 for now... will post .wav soon)

Onwards.

Next up is a visual feast, the first music video from my other-side-project, The Chemical Perils.

This is likely going to be the one single from the mini-album, Legs Broken.

We rented a beautiful old church, The Spire in Brighton, brought our resident film-maker Scott Chalmers, and took it over with some foot-stampingly good gypsy-punk.

I think it might be Hana's best performance yet 😂

Here is the result:

VLOG + PHOTOBOX

The actual month of October was a busy one as ever - you'll see some bts bits from HEX (next single to come), us filming a live session at Brighton Electric, and some stupidly high vocals! TONS of photos so there's content here for you...

Enjoy!

Enough content for you? Too much? Ok, how about we take...

A Moment's Rest

See what I did there? Ha. Yep, this month's cover is a beautiful rendition of the already beautiful country song A Moment's Rest from Devil Makes Three.

It's suitably sad and longing, a true classic and according to my streaming data it's my most listened to song... enjoy our rendition

Finally, I've set up a Dischord Group for us patrons! To be honest I've no idea what or how it works but it would be great to have somewhere to chat - I've had this idea for a while now that we could help each other out with skill swaps, contacts, whatever the group needs, and it doesn't have to be music related, just a great place to share and connect. Let me know if you're interested, and I'll see you there!

JOIN GROUP

Don't forget, the next livestream is on December 17th, where Anna and myself battle on drums and piano, and play through an entire Birdeatsbaby album of YOUR CHOICE - vote here. All patrons go free, and please do invite your friends! Tickets are available to the public here.

Right. That's quite enough from me. I definitely need a cup of tea... thank you as always, for being here.

Love & Feathers,

Mishkin x

PS - The Catherine Elms album I Have Seen It, I Do Not Fear It is now fully out (and produced right here at The Nest!)... if you want a bit of Tori Amos meets Nick Cave meets Dresden Dolls with lush orchestral instrumentation then give it a listen here: Spotify and Tidal.

Cover art is by the one and only Scott Chalmers and it's beautiful:

Amazing update as ever. Love the Legs Broken video, especially - you all are as silly as you are talented :) Also noticed the Jo Quail recommendation - discovered her last year (?) doing a project with Tom Elliot Morris, she's cool AF.

Richard Bennett

it's shocking how much amazing stuff, across so many genres, y'all create!
