I thought your assessment was fair! Because associating “incorrect English” with Blackness is very much racism. And it does tie into your previous assessment that this man has a weird obsession with “purity.” Evoking Blackness as antithetical to intelligence or properness (things he deems “good” and are of high value to him) speaks volumes about how he feels about Black people. And especially Black girls in particular in this instance. He could’ve easily said “Stop speaking like that, I can’t understand you” without bringing up race. OP trying to paint you as in the wrong for pointing that out speaks more about him than about you and your intent. I mean all that to say, you didn’t do anything wrong.

Hey Dave I really admire your ability to approach Topics that are both uncomfortable and subjective. I can tell you from the perspective of a black woman, you handled the portion well and am glad that you pointed it out. This is an extremely common micro aggression myself and many other black people face on a daily basis. Complacency is not the way to fight injustice and has never been. Thanks for not freaking out and being quite rational with your response, Thomas. I am quite used to outbursts, especially when it may seem that one's opinion could be in the minority. After much thought I've come to the decision I'll leave this section of video as is. But the conversation overall has most definitely sparked thought within me. Whenever I approach the discussion of racism in the future, I'll for sure be putting more thought into it than I did when I approached this one.

My whole intent was to say stop creating or fabricating racism where it doesn't need to be. My comment is in no way to say that you haven't experienced racism nor that it is fake. Hi, Tomas. A thank you as well for being here so long! Initially I had thought of the possibility that race was a contributing factor to this man's "dating"... or should I say, targeting preference. Ultimately I chose to not comment on that because there was no direct words from him indicating that to be the case. The whole racism thought breakdown in my mind came down to his decision to portray a style of language which he attributed to "black girls" as a negative, less intelligent thing. I used to think racism was all about crazy people wearing white sheets and refusing to associate with people of a certain colour. Over the years I've come to learn that it's much more subtle. I thought that this section of chat log was a really good way to highlight how that can play out. I'm certain Raf (PhilosophyGuy) didn't think that he was being racist when he said what he said. But on a subconscious level, I felt an underlying sense that he looks down on an entire community. By telling the decoy, who's white, to not speak like a black girl, it read to me as though he was telling her that she's better than a whole group of people. It didn't make sense to me why he would involve colour into that conversation when he could've easily said something such as, "Please use proper English, shortening words makes you sound silly" Or, If he had said something along the lines of "You're white, not black, you can't pull that sort of lingo off" then I wouldn't have brought up any of that racism stuff at all in the video. It all came down to his choice of words which i found interesting to dig into. He may very well not be racist and merely phrased his thoughts quite poorly, and I imagine that's what Thomas is feeling when he heard that section of my video. I do understand that this topic is very sensitive right now in America. To Thomas, and possibly many others, It may have seemed like I was over reacting over something as simple as poor word choice. Almost like I'm looking for a problem where there is none. For me to reflect inwards on the racism thoughts I had. I can't say I ever grew up in a family or setting where race was any sort of issue in regards to my family not liking a certain group of people. My school was multi cultural and If anything I remember experiencing racism myself. In a range of ways. As mentioned, I'm part Arabic and that brought me a lot of trouble. The "Aussie white kids" wouldn't associate with me in school. I wouldn't get let into clubs or pubs because I was a "wog". I even remember once this old lady getting up to move away from me when I sat on a train seat next to her, then I over heard her talking to someone else about how "those people" shouldn't be let into the country. I really only learned about racism on a more global and less self focussed scale well into my late teen years when I started to learn more about American culture. Side note, in Australia we have a major issue with the general population viewing indigenous Australians (who are black) as a "problem". That is a whole other conversation though because the issues there are insanely complicated. I imagine the conversation about that would look very similar to the issues surrounding indigenous American's. Homophobia here is a different story, although, another topic for another day. That was, and still is a major issue in Australia, at least Western Sydney where I grew up. I appreciate your comment. I won't lie, I was spending a lot of time reflecting on my thoughts and experiences regarding this issue, reading your comment has helped to ease my mind a little. In saying that, I still am very interested to hear what Thomas has to say. I love hearing different perspectives and I imagine we are all friends here and share a level of respect for one another. If someone is on this page, they like my content and my thoughts, and I believe that whoever is here, they're likely someone that I could connect with seeing as I put so much of myself into each video. So i'm not dismissive of Thomas's position and look forward to hearing his view, if he chooses to share it. Thanks for reading my novel btw haha

I may be reading to much in to this, but I think Thomas may be trying to dissuade you from calling out racism when you see it by saying that the only people who talk about racism are racists. The irony of course being that it tends to be racists that try to quiet down conversation on the topic. Regarding the point in the chat, I do think it was pretty blatant racism. The only reason to learn one's race that early in to a conversation is if the continuation of that conversation depends on the race given. You could call it a dating preference, but again if their race is the only factor that prevents you from wanting to date someone, yes that is racism. I will say that racism itself is a more complicated topic than outward expression alone. In America I grew up in a relatively progressive family (Christians but less vocal about the everyone going to hell bit) but even then through family, school, the internet, essentially everyone around me. I learned racism, homophobia, there was some transphobia but there would have been more if trans people were more prevalent in society then. As an adult, I fight against it. I advocate for rights for all people. Even then, you can't escape the ingrained "first thought". Things may be different in Australia, for example there may not have been as many race targeting laws in the past or there may have been less talking about other groups of people behind their backs, but I suspect highly our op friend is more than likely from a background similar to mine, but rather than fight against it, they want to sweep it under the proverbial rug. Also a long time viewer btw All in all, it's worth looking in to history and reflecting on your own thoughts for the racism question. I wouldn't take the claim that talking about racism makes you racist seriously.

Thomas, for starters thank you for watching so long and being kind with your criticism. You know me by now and that I'm always open to listening to, and understanding criticism. I have to admit, I most definitely didn't expect that when I wrote that part, but it doesn't mean I'm not taking what you're saying seriously. When I was a younger man, there was a lady I was dating and at the time she helped me understand a few negative parts of my personality which I truly thought were not a part of me up until that point. But through understanding her reasons and knowing it came from a place of care, I was able to see what she was talking about. Most of it all revolved around the way I delivered criticism to others and how I could make people feel with my blunt nature. I thought I was very soft in how I approached others but she helped me realise that there was absolutely more work I could put in to understanding my approach to communication. What I'm saying is, I am very open to understanding and working on bettering myself if it needs to happen. In saying that though, I don't believe I harbour any underlying issues that I myself may be racist. I actually feel quite confident in that belief. But I do want to hear you out. I want to understand what you're saying because if there's even the slight chance that there's a part of my personality that could view things in a manner which I deem to be unpleasant, I would like to understand and address that. So first. For you to say that only racists see racism. That indicates to me that this section of chat log that I highlighted, you did not view it as racism. Would you be able to give me your interpretation of that moment ? Also, would you be able to give me a run down regarding what you view my words held in terms of underlying racism? When I wrote it, I thought I was witnessing blatant racism, so I had no issues calling it out as I suspected it was obvious to see. I've grown up in an area that is very multicultural, lots of different colours and people all mixed Into a melting pot together. If I had ever heard anyone say that another should stop talking like a (insert colour) person here. My automatic assumption is that they don't like that group of people. So if you can answer those questions it will help me to understand my own views better. Whether I change my stance or feel more confident in my thoughts, I'll understand myself better. Also, you absolutely don't have to answer. It's not your job to try make me see something that might seem obvious to you.
