Have you backed up your Anki decks this month?
Added 2021-01-28 05:17:01 +0000 UTCBackups are super important for any data that you invest a lot of time in. Do yourself a favor: from the Anki main screen, click File → Export, click Export..... save the colpkg file somewhere on your dropbox, or on an external drive. And do this every month!

good point, I haven't paid much attention to that feature. It does say that media is not included, so you'd have to back that up yourself.
2021-01-28 07:58:01 +0000 UTCAnki does backups by default. I set the number to 50, I think. From there being in a Mac Time Machine will take over and from time to time Carbon Copy Cloner. So I have all versions as backup on two different harddrive with two different backup tools. One if those harddrive goes regularly out of house. Therefore I'm not in need to make backups by export.
2021-01-28 07:52:52 +0000 UTCIn theory, it's always possible to maintain open source software even if the original author abandons it. There might be issues like diverging forks, different replacement ankiweb servers, but there are many people who want Anki to continue and they will try to make it happen.
2021-01-28 07:52:46 +0000 UTCthanks for the reminder, I've personally already done my monthly backup. It would indeed be harsh if I were to loose all my cards, I too spent tons of hours making them. But I feel like if Anki disappeared tomorrow (with AnkiSync) I wouldn't have much of a use of that file anyway :) maybe I'm wrong though, the thought that anki is open source kinda makes me feel more secure about th is
