Man. I have always HATED JRPGs. I think I lost a friend over FFX/2 debate. It’s so depressing when I see these “games” get 10/10… Might be a cool movie but let’s get to the point, Im not running around playing dress up for 100 hours. Whats funny though, is there’s still part of me that gets interested in recent title like octapath just for the art/visuals.

I used to fall asleep during JRPG playthroughs (Dragon Quest, Persona, Pokemon) but I would keep going to see the story. It wasn't until I played Shiren the Wanderer that I took a look in the mirror and admitted that maybe I didn't like the genre and I needed a more active style of gameplay like Shiren has. Also on the topic of Pokemon, I honestly never enjoyed the games as a single player experience, but I think they really shine in multiplayer, especially when battling other people. I have not played a pokemon game in a long time but I will enjoy battles with others on Pokemon showdown from time to time.

I remember as a kid running into these same thoughts about jrpgs. One of my favorite moments was beating red in Gen 2 without grinding a single battle and all my pokemon around lvl 30. Also in Gen 3 I remember doing the whole elite 4 with no items and only 1 pokemon. Suddenly routing became exciting and strategic and important what moves I used and where so I didn’t run out of PP or lose. I also think the concept of nuzlockes is fascinating even though I don’t think about it like you do. I just love the concept of gameifying genres that needed to test more traditional gaming elements like routing and strategy
