Added 2020-01-31 21:58:22 +0000 UTCHi everyone!
I am now accepting submissions for the Feb topic videos! If you can , please try and get me your idea ASAP, because on Feb 7th I plan to drop a topic video each day of the month. There are still Jan topic videos that are going to come out. So the 7th of February is when I start switching over to the Feb topic videos (hopefully this makes sense ha.)
Feel free to post your topic idea here or message me, I have created a spreadsheet to keep track of everything ha.
Cheers and thank you so much for supporting!
Mark

Do shmups need to / should they casualize (and/or) drastically change in order to attract a larger (mainstream) audience?

2020-02-07 20:23:04 +0000 UTCI was watching this Doom speedrun vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4k3lLf3GyDI and the guy talks about how RNG makes speedrunners avoid the 100% kill challenges because you never know exactly what damage your weapon is going to do or where the AI is going to send the monsters off to when you need them to be in specific places. So a cool topic would be your thoughts on RNG in shmups. Heavy RNG probably has mass casual & new gamer replay value appeal with the popularity of roguelikes (plus nostalgia for Euroshmups), but that makes it annoying for gamers who love the mastery of memorizing & manipulating exactly what the game will do in the middle of all the chaos and enemy layouts using RNG rarely feel as good as hand-crafted challenges. Do you think there's some happy balance, or do the two types of games just appeal to two completely different groups? Have you seen any clever uses of RNG in shmups? Or had any brutal moments of RNG snatching defeat from the jaws of victory?

2020-02-07 20:21:01 +0000 UTCHow about a video on the 10k hour rule and skill carryover between games? Is more time in the genre/more efficient practice methods the main reason that some people can destroy games so fast, or is talent a factor? Could also be cool to talk about hours vs talent in the FGC as well.

2020-02-05 19:21:04 +0000 UTCWhether it is due to a resurgence of interest or perceived ease of development, there seem to be a large number of new indie shmups being developed such as these two: https://store.steampowered.com/app/790060/The_Void_Rains_Upon_Her_Heart/ https://store.steampowered.com/app/1088420/Wings_Of_Bluestar/?beta=0 I myself am looking to start developing a shmup (again, since I began development of one about year ago and dropped it because it wasn't shaping up to my expectations). My question is what sorts of qualities should new shmup developers be targetting? Should they cater to the niche loyalist audience or look towards a sweeping Undertale-style of appeal? Should they be console/home centric or mimic arcade setups?

2020-02-04 20:19:57 +0000 UTCHitbox sizes, how they dictate the gameplay styles. Various examples: Very Large - Bio-ship paladin (ship changes size based on how much energy), Terra Cresta and UFO Robo Dangar (full ship combo), Armed Police Unit Gallop (aka Cosmic Cop international name) Large / Medium size - various classic shmups that cover the whole square box, sometimes changes in hitbox size is not as drastic, like Dragon Spirit and Saber with increasing heads Medium / small - covers the cockpit area for 90's and transitional shooting games Tiny / single pixel - bullet hell games Multi-hitbox components - Tumiki Fighter (shmup with toy block and stackable enemy craft)

2020-02-04 14:28:15 +0000 UTC"It can be put simply by asking what would give more quick and accurate movements, a stick in a pot filled with water or one filled with mud? The only type of joystick where strong spring resistance has a legitimate place is the analog joystick under games with movement speed sensitivity." https://slagcoin.com/joystick/attributes_brands.html I want to know how you feel about this quote :)

2020-02-03 20:28:05 +0000 UTCHow many games should the average person play if they want to improve? and How long should they expect that to take? This is coming from a married 46 year old with kids who dreams of getting good at Mortal Kombat and Deathtiny while simultaneously dabbling in stuff like Stardew Valley and Mario Kart, among others. I think I'm kidding myself. So how many games do you play and expect to improve at simultaneously? I think you are a dad as well. Help me get gud! :)

2020-02-03 19:44:22 +0000 UTCVertical vs. Horizontal Shmups: It could be about game-feel, strategy and/or historical context. Also (this may be better suited to a separate topic) why you prefer tate vertical shmups to those on a standard horizontal display.

2020-02-02 22:33:24 +0000 UTCAfter hearing you talk about playing DoDonpachi for 2-3 years to get the 2-ALL, a topic I would like you to discuss is: "How do you keep yourself motivated and prevent burning out on your favorite title?"
