Music Theory Monday 30 | Sus chords vs add9 and add11 chords

Where to Start • Lesson Archive • Recommended Lesson PlanBook a Private Lesson

Hi Everyone,

This lesson is about comparing sus2 and sus4 to add9 and add11 chords. The next lesson will really solidify which add9 and add11 chords fit in a key. I was going to attach a chart, but we'll work through it in the next lesson.

If you'd like to practice building your own add9 and add11 chords, use the attached scratch paper. If you have followup questions and/or wanna talk more about add9 and add11 chords, let's talk on the community forum.

Music Theory Monday 30 | Sus chords vs add9 and add11 chords

Hey there... as Scott is talking about an A add9 as an open chord in the video, I just thought about a beautiful example of an A add9 in the chorus of "My friends" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It's in the "... hurt by the cold" part of the chorus.

Happy to hear! Feel free to start this series (Music Theory Monday) from the beginning if you need to fill any gaps!

Wow, what a coincidence, I’m new here, this is my first MTM, and you already answered my prolonged mystery questions, what are color chords and how to design and apply them to almost any songs. Thank you Scott !
