NOTE: if you're at all squeamish, be aware that this describes (very little) bat harm, but also a close-up with many many many many bats, so use your judgement, thanks.

I have a similar family story (sans bats): When my Grandpa Albert was 8 or so, his dad took him to see a house and asked if he should buy it. Young Albert went over the place, checked the size of the kitchen, made sure there was enough bedroom space for all the kids, and gave the go-ahead. I guess some parents used to rely heavily on their children!
