A Timely Antigua Mail Bag

A letter from a listener gives fresh insight into Denise and Larry.

How'd they spell "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" with an H? Whimpy?

Alex Schmidt

But hey, I've heard all sorts of crackpot ideas from would-be bestselling self-published authors to try and get their books noticed, not limited to "sneak a copy of your book into a local bookstore and put it on the shelves, when someone tries to buy it, the store will have no choice but to enter it into 'The System" and "flood every forum, chatroom, mailing-list, etc. you can with messages exhorting people to check out your book, some people might not ignore you or be annoyed by you and actually look at your book!"

I just love that Denise was trying to trick people who were looking for Antigua travel information into buying her fantasy book. Just imagine looking for the Lonely Planet guide to Antigua and Barbuda and this purple dragon book pops up in your search results. Well say, I was looking for the best beaches in the Caribbean, but this land of Fairies, Wizards, and Heroes intrigues me...

Aww, Denise and Larry! I still miss Drunk Larry.

Knowing a little bit about self-publishing tells me that Denise didn't know *anything* about selling books on Amazon, let alone anywhere. Understanding and developing keywords is such an important part of the self-publishing process that there are paid software applications that crawl through Amazon listings so you can harvest and imitate popular titles' keywords. But repeating or adding improper tags is the biggest no-no: keyword "stuffing" will make Amazon's algorithm deliberately put a negative weight on your title, sinking you further down the rankings list and ruining any potential sales.

Isn't Brisingr the catchphrase of Old Sheldon?

Edmund Prenter

Any rational person would just let their widely mocked book quietly slip out of print and put it behind them. Denise doesn't sound all that rational.

So glad I dived into the Wayback Machine for this.
