Added 2021-05-20 15:34:47 +0000 UTCA famous person wrote a book so it would be rude of us not to read and discuss this person's work.
First assignment: Read through chapter 6

I wish I could start. This is as bad as it gets for me.

2021-06-02 13:29:18 +0000 UTCUpdate: I finished the book. I'm with Amanda Martyn, it's hard to put down once you start, even at the crappy first kiss scene at the end. Barf! I even tweeted at Tyra Banks to tell her I couldn't stop reading it. She never replied. Part of me wants to see this book as a graphic novel, and that part will also be disappointed with the artwork as it'll look nothing as I imagined it. I still laugh at the fact my husband kept looking over my shoulder while I was reading and asked "What's a Ci squiggly L?" And "What's wrong with the name spellings in this book?" 🤦
Eliza Gillliam
2021-05-31 17:06:08 +0000 UTCI had to read ahead this time as I borrowed the E-book from the library. I didn't need to read it all in one week, and yet I did just that. Honestly so hard to put down once it got going.
Amanda Martyn
2021-05-31 16:53:51 +0000 UTCIn addition to the Allison Pregler YouTube video, may I recommend the Satellite Dish podcast episodes where the hosts of Sawbones slowly lose their minds breaking summarizing Modelland way back in 2013: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/satellite-dish-with-justin-and-sydnee/id493439623?i=1000128151130 https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/satellite-dish-with-justin-and-sydnee/id493439623?i=1000131357725 https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/satellite-dish-with-justin-and-sydnee/id493439623?i=1000136250259

2021-05-27 21:39:34 +0000 UTCNot sure if it has "better" editing, though.

2021-05-27 21:38:49 +0000 UTCDo you think she sent a copy to all of her model friends?
Eliza Gillliam
2021-05-27 21:37:56 +0000 UTCThat's actually impressive!
Eliza Gillliam
2021-05-27 21:37:19 +0000 UTCSomeone please stop me. I've been reading this damn book day and night, on my phone or on my tablet. I just got to chapter 47.
Eliza Gillliam
2021-05-27 21:36:31 +0000 UTCThat happened when I bought a used copy of one of Mike's books (it was signed by Mike, not Tyra just to be clear)
Jake Westbrook
2021-05-27 04:48:26 +0000 UTCCheck that. Now I'm on chapter 27, switching from tablet to phone, reading even while walking my child in the stroller. I.... Can't... Stop...reading this crap....
Eliza Gillliam
2021-05-27 03:28:58 +0000 UTCI just got my cheap used copy from Amazon! When I opened it, I realized it had been signed by Tyra herself with a sharpie. 😂 Anyone else have this happen?
Mandie Cornelius
2021-05-25 20:48:57 +0000 UTCThis has been in my Amazon cart for almost a year because I kept thinking, "Any day now..." And now that my copy has finally arrived, I get the added bonus that it smells powerfully of Chanel No 5. I'm 100% sure I've got Christy Turlington's old copy!

2021-05-23 19:48:40 +0000 UTCI remember watching this and it being hilariously cringe, so I agree we should watch with some fresh Modelland context.

2021-05-23 18:00:22 +0000 UTCOh god, why am I already on chapter 12....
Eliza Gillliam
2021-05-22 23:54:39 +0000 UTCCan we please PLEASE do a watch along of Next Top Model season 17 where the contestants actually recreate the book in a short film? It's on Hulu. From wikipedia: America's Next Top Model, Cycle 17, Banks instructs the four remaining contestants in episode "Tyson Beckford" to perform as characters in the novel, in a short film based on the book, with part 1 of the film broadcast in that episode, part 2 was broadcast in the season finale.
Eliza Gillliam
2021-05-22 23:54:00 +0000 UTCSome options for those awaiting delivery of physical copies of the books. E-copies are available at Open Library (https://openlibrary.org/works/OL16086806W/Modelland?edition=modelland00bank_0) and at the Internet Archive (https://archive.org/details/modelland00bank_0).

2021-05-22 16:23:40 +0000 UTCI hope you guys are happy at what you’re doing to my library reading stats/recommendations.
Jennifer Tomich
2021-05-22 15:10:06 +0000 UTCMy copy is on its way. From the sound of it, this is going to be the kind of bloated, rambling, hackneyed yet random insanity I remember my writers group days, only with (slightly?) better editing. I cannot wait.
Elizabeth
2021-05-22 13:39:51 +0000 UTCGot a kindle version of it and... this is already completely bonkers.
Dave Chadwick
2021-05-22 06:32:39 +0000 UTCIt was, and I was one of the people who suggested it. (The response I got was like 'you're definitely not the first' in a nice way.
Suzie Baunsgard
2021-05-22 05:39:05 +0000 UTCI really want to read it, cause I think it'd be fun and this is my first new book since I started listening. However, I got into Yale's writers workshop and will be work shopping my first novel all next month, on top of 10 other manuscripts to read, so I'm gonna hold off on this one.

2021-05-22 05:27:31 +0000 UTCBooksjar too
Elizabeth Meredith
2021-05-22 03:27:44 +0000 UTCYes, but it's downloading as an ascm file?! Very weird, but I can read it on my phone or computer...yay?
Emily Brown
2021-05-22 02:51:40 +0000 UTCYeah, mine doesn’t arrive until the first week of June. Since this one is a little harder to find, maybe they will wait a bit before they start?
Taylor Conner
2021-05-22 02:14:06 +0000 UTCI think we have "eccentric" covered...
Amy Shaw
2021-05-21 17:23:28 +0000 UTCI think it depends on the audience. Fortunately, your audience is full of well-read polymaths who enjoy simultaneously catching up on the latest issue of Foreign Affairs and binge-watching America's Next Top Model. *hair flip*
Amy Shaw
2021-05-21 15:34:17 +0000 UTCI read the first three chapters last night. I'm reading the e-book, so it's hard to tell, but I suspect the formatting must be why its so long, because it was not a slog. I mean, it was completely insane. But it went quickly. On a related note, I'm never eating whipped cream again.
Amy Shaw
2021-05-21 13:21:52 +0000 UTCYou mean this challenge? https://youtu.be/hpsiFufZV_4

2021-05-21 12:54:15 +0000 UTCSadly, yes.
JLG
2021-05-21 11:45:00 +0000 UTCIt'd still be better than Shadow Moon.

2021-05-21 11:44:26 +0000 UTCYou are correct sir.
JLG
2021-05-21 11:39:51 +0000 UTCThis is exciting. Props to the person who submitted it. I remember the challenge where the girls had to perform scenes... big yikes.
Zann Reynolds
2021-05-21 09:32:44 +0000 UTCMaybe I'm misremembering, but wasn't this book mentioned before (on this pod) as a potential candidate, like on one of the in-between episodes? Either way I'm stoked, my local library is open again and actually has a copy (mostly I'm excited I can go back to the actual library).
Balaji S
2021-05-21 05:03:19 +0000 UTCThe Super Dave episode was the first one and maybe the best. That show has some of the funniest moments I’ve ever seen... Hoping that one day it comes back.
Taylor Conner
2021-05-21 03:15:50 +0000 UTCI watched a super cut this aftenoon and his take to the camera was the standout moment that I texted Mike about -C

2021-05-21 03:01:40 +0000 UTC“Super Dave” Osbourne’s response to Adam Eget asking “Where do you get your ideas from?” is priceless, as is everything about Norm MacDonald Live.
Taylor Conner
2021-05-21 02:00:47 +0000 UTCThis is also the first book I will read along with the podcast. However, I just finished the 3 page prologue and it’s almost too much for me. I’m afraid I’ll be cutting myself by Chapter 7.
JA Wallace
2021-05-21 01:49:17 +0000 UTCFew pages into this and I envision a movie version of this being filmed in the same weirdo 90s “style” as Cool As Ice.
Jenny S
2021-05-21 01:43:25 +0000 UTCSnagged it as an ebook from my local library. Page 1 and already dead 💀
Jenny S
2021-05-21 01:38:25 +0000 UTCThis will be the first book I read along with the podcast. Looking forward to Ms. Banks' Wild Ride.
Steve Schrader
2021-05-20 22:14:08 +0000 UTCI think Ross Perot would be a more interesting comparison

2021-05-20 21:19:29 +0000 UTC"You begin your mornings with staring at the fog, longing for the fateful evening when it will turn a golden yellow and then, finally, like a push up brassiere, lift." Classy!
Eliza Gillliam
2021-05-20 19:52:29 +0000 UTCOverdrive has it as an epub.
Eliza Gillliam
2021-05-20 19:42:01 +0000 UTCI'm looking forward to seeing how batshit this one is. I can't believe my library has a copy!
Crystal
2021-05-20 19:35:36 +0000 UTCFound it on abebooks, but it's not arriving until June 15 😿
Elizabeth Meredith
2021-05-20 19:02:41 +0000 UTCI hope no one adds it to the 372 wiki page until it's announced to non patreons ..
Elizabeth Meredith
2021-05-20 19:02:03 +0000 UTCVery much excited for this one!! Got one of those cheap used copies from Amazon and it won’t arrive until June, but I will try to be patient…
Mandie Cornelius
2021-05-20 17:48:44 +0000 UTCI also note that it was intended to be a trilogy. Key word: intended.
Amy Shaw
2021-05-20 17:43:26 +0000 UTCI totally binged the show when I was single in my 20s with nothing better to do on a Saturday afternoon while cleaning. Oh, who am I kidding. I didn’t clean.
Amy Shaw
2021-05-20 17:41:57 +0000 UTC“A befuddling piece of dreckitude.” “Certifiably batty.” I’M IN.
Amy Shaw
2021-05-20 17:39:21 +0000 UTCYES.
Amy Shaw
2021-05-20 17:30:23 +0000 UTC"In May 2021, Conor Lastowka and Michael J. Nelson selected this as their next book for analysis on the podcast "372 Pages We'll Never Get Back," a podcast dedicated to books the hosts do not expect to like." in case it gets edited soon
Noah Eigenfeld
2021-05-20 17:16:33 +0000 UTCFamous Person Book PTSD coming right up!

2021-05-20 17:15:29 +0000 UTCWhich one of you updated wikipedia already? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modelland#Cross_media_promotion

2021-05-20 17:14:54 +0000 UTCThe reruns used to be on VH1 quite a bit, so whenever my school had a snow day, I found myself watching it casually.

2021-05-20 16:53:22 +0000 UTCMay God have mercy on our souls.

2021-05-20 16:52:18 +0000 UTCI'm #TeamConor on this one.
Gina Dalfonzo
2021-05-20 16:47:36 +0000 UTCI was just gonna say, this is our first book with a theme park tie-in, since TekWorld and Argonia never got off the ground.
Moviegique
2021-05-20 16:46:33 +0000 UTCIf the video reviews of this one are anything to go by, we are in for a War Hell Ride...
valadilenne
2021-05-20 16:46:22 +0000 UTCI admit I watched a ton of that show, was actually kinda fun
Terry Bennett
2021-05-20 16:33:20 +0000 UTCI think that's the deal breaker on this one. Eye of Argon is fun and quirky because it's 40 pages (or so) long. But at 569 pages? We'd hate it with the force of the Sun.
Mike Truman
2021-05-20 16:31:42 +0000 UTCI watched Allison Pregler read this entire book on her YouTube channel over the last year (I think you can still see the abridged version there). This book is truly, TRULY insane. I can't wait to hear what Mike and Conor have to say about it, but I'm also a little worried that it might break them.
Kate D
2021-05-20 16:26:48 +0000 UTCAnd just so you know, "smize" is the trademark phrase of Tyra Banks which means "smiling with your eyes". It was featured a lot on America's Next Top Model. Please don't ask how I know that.
Jesse Shade
2021-05-20 16:14:18 +0000 UTCSo I googled the book, and Modelland is also the name of a "modeling theme park" that Tyra was looking to open last year before COVID hit, where tickets would cost **$1,495**: https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/experience/america/theme-parks/2020/02/25/tyra-banks-modelland-theme-park-tickets-sale-up-1-495/4866083002/ So perhaps if this park opens up by the time we're finished with the book, maybe we can fundraise together to buy you two guys tickets and bring the experience full circle. Come on, gang, one of you has to be an eccentric millionaire--let's make this happen!
Jesse Shade
2021-05-20 16:13:01 +0000 UTCIt's not hard to say "jhyfe" is it?

2021-05-20 16:08:37 +0000 UTCEpisode 100!! Party time!!
Kelly Long
2021-05-20 16:05:18 +0000 UTC"Skye O'Malley" sounds like a character from Tek War.
There was a clever name here. It's gone now.
2021-05-20 15:59:51 +0000 UTCWhat do we think, does the author really have more name recognition than Madeline Albright?
372 Pages We'll Never Get Back
2021-05-20 15:59:43 +0000 UTC569 pages! Good lord
Tyler Short
2021-05-20 15:58:58 +0000 UTCStopped dead in my tracks and nearly fainted from Connor's pronunciation of "gif". Get help man, we're here for you.
