Episode 56 - For the Benefit of Evil Bird Kite
Added 2019-10-04 22:15:07 +0000 UTCTo say that LOTWW took an unexpected turn in this section would be a slap in the face to unexpected turns. While it appeared to be inching (worm pun) its way toward an exploration of the enormous holes that TOTALLY PROVE the existence of giant worms, most of the second quarter of the book is dedicated to Caswall's enormous bird kite.
Does he love the kite? Feel bad about the terror it hath wrought? Who knows! Stoker's writing is no more clear than Oolanga's expressions of love to Lady Arabella.
We'll also listen in on a historical conversation Stoker had, and Mike turns the tables on Conor by having him guess Real or Fanfic?
For next time read thru Chapter 23
Comments
There's a lot of commentary on this book at GoodReads, almost all of it staggered by the racism. But there are some people who gave it 5 stars. Definitely a candidate for a game of "Guess What Else They Rated".

2019-10-08 14:27:05 +0000 UTCI listen to this at work and had to rewind that first “mind battle” scene on audible a few times, I was sure I was missing the part where it went from the mind battle to the birdemic but no, it really was that abrupt. What’s the next random side story is going to pop up next? Is White Worm lady going to become a compassionate veterinarian for several chapters before the big reveal as the monster? Also, I missed what the chapters we read for next time. I’m guessing chapters 17-22?

2019-10-06 15:00:37 +0000 UTCYou do know that the Beatles stole that from a line in the Francis Coleman autobiography's chapter on The Beast of Yucca Flats, which he subtitled "Being for the Benefit of Tor Johnson," right?

2019-10-06 05:22:43 +0000 UTCI'm reading this on Kindle, and the "most highlighted passages" are the super-ultra-racist sentences. I'm not sure what that means, exactly.

2019-10-06 02:18:31 +0000 UTCI really didn't think this book could get more racist. Then it got more racist.

2019-10-05 16:15:59 +0000 UTCI can only imagine that the film adaptation of this book is going to contain far less kite action than its source material...or, at the very least, far less hideous racism. But hey, this movie did come out a couple of years after SOUL MAN, so who knows.

2019-10-05 15:32:29 +0000 UTCWhen the kite fell, giving Mimi hope, Bes fell with it. That's why Replacement Edward had to futz around with it again. I'm now convinced that the entire plot is going to hinge on Bes.

2019-10-05 13:52:36 +0000 UTC"Mongooses" is the oldest and most commonly accepted plural, but I believe "mongeese" is becoming mainstream. In the way that people say "irregardless" when they mean "regardless."

2019-10-05 00:04:34 +0000 UTCMongi? Monguy? I think the plural is "Mongeese", isn't it? FWIW that sudden shift you note is NOT part of the abridgment. It's just as jarring in the original.
