Episode 41 - Handsome Buttocks
Added 2019-05-08 18:24:22 +0000 UTCWho's ready to get British and horny?? This is our first episode devoted to The Mister by EL James, and it's obviously unlike anything we've read on here before. We'll examine the author's clever methods for padding out the book length, as well as some very surprising similarities to the works of Ernest Cline. We'll also examine how a cartoon wolf might respond to the sight of someone polishing a piano in an alluring nylon housecoat. We'll also check out the dark web and establish some powerful new Albanian stereotypes. Join us!!!
All this plus some truly Dumb Sentences of the week and a surprisingly tricky Fanfic or Real? segment
For next time, read thru chapter 9, page 156

2019-05-10 18:56:10 +0000 UTCAs I recall he actually looks at her, but he's still asleep? And in case you're thinking "Absurd, that's not how sleep works", well it goes even farther in the next chapter!!

2019-05-10 17:32:37 +0000 UTCAnother thing, as MJN was mentioning, there are parentheticals, inner dialog, reported inner dialog, ITALIC inner dialog, and tagged inner dialog, all seemingly performing the same job. Of all the things to nitpick, this is my first because it feels so random. Unless the italic inner dialog is meant to be sarcastic or emphasized in a different way. Also, Maximus Prime is done in 1st person, but Alessia is done in 3rd person. I am glad to finally experience a book with such a jarring approach to POV.

2019-05-10 14:24:41 +0000 UTCConor, someone, please help me figure this out: Alessia sees Maximum for the first time while he sleeps, then mentions his green eyes at least 2 times in the same scene. Did I miss where she A) saw some photos of him on the wall, or B) peeled his eyelids back to check his eye color. I am not an expert on sleeping, but I think most people's eyes are closed, preventing you from staring into their green ruby orbs of vision.

2019-05-10 01:38:28 +0000 UTCI donโt really know who Tinder for, I assumed it was still for hook ups. Iโve never had luck using it to talk with anyone or find a date with it(not interested in hookups), so who knows ๐

2019-05-08 22:10:37 +0000 UTCMinor literary comment: I think the He's Awake! line in chapter two falls under "Free Indirect Discourse" or "Free Indirect Speech" https://www.shmoop.com/literature-glossary/free-indirect-discourse.html When EL switches to third person, the unmarked observations are still from the perspective of the character we are closely following, because boy does EL closely follow. The evolution of 3rd person style/formatting went something like this: Old old timey authors had to format it thusly: Dungworth looked out the window. "The Thames sure is bloody murky today," Dungworth thought to himself. Sort of old times: Dungworth looked out the window. The Thames sure is bloody murky today, Dungworth thought to himself. (allowed to lose the "") Current: Dungworth looked out the window. The bloody murky Thames slithered below the window. Our observer is still Dungworth, unless we have an intervening point of view pull back, cinematic style. So the He's awake! punctuation is courtesy of Alessia's reaction, and is legit, I believe. EL's peppering her prose with actual unquoted mindspeech (why some italic and some not??) is an awkward and aggravating writing tic. I'd never try and argue she's doing this well, just that I don't think she's messed this particular thing up and inserted another narrator. EL's toneless lack of varying the distance to Alessia will probably continue to keep her out of trouble on this point.

2019-05-08 21:04:53 +0000 UTCAnother Clineian touch-- Henry the Vacuum always making Alessia smile is like in Armada at the Starbase Ace when the door-sounds always make Lightman smile. Also, I think the name "Trevelyan" is borrowed from an Irish folk-song "The Fields of Athenry".... or that's how I've been reading/pronouncing it.

2019-05-08 20:26:43 +0000 UTCI want to say I found this a fun and refreshing read. Of course, the last book I read was two-thirds of Bob Honey (I eventually took the Kindle it was on into the desert where I ceremoniously set it alight), so I am sure I would have found the Esperanto translation of Ulysses a fun and refreshing read.
