I think you're missing that the father's mother was the previous holder of One for All, Almight's teacher, and she abandoned him as a child to go off and fight All for One... as far as he's concerned, "hero's will abandon their loved ones to save people they don't even know". It's not something you can expect a child to process in a positive way... she did it for the greater good, for humanity, etc. He hates heroes, doesn't want his family to have anything to do with them. Heroes are these righteous figures in society, but for the one's they go home to, that's not always the case, Endeavor prime example. It's also implied here that this was the first time he struck Tenko, which is why she said if he's going to raise a hand against them, they won't follow his rules. He also didn't want him to have a quirk... he said at his age, if he hadn't already, he wouldn't develop a quirk, so he needed to give up on being a hero, or he'd be in for nothing but disappointment, and that the life of a hero is one that just brings pain to their families and loved ones. Much like with Endeavor, the writer includes a lot of nuance with these characters. They're not good people, not good fathers... but there are reasons behind their own development that we shouldn't ignore. At the end of the day here, this man never recovered from his own childhood trauma, and didn't need to have kids of his own for that reason.
