Principles and Practicality

I really, really hate KU's exclusivity rule, especially since you 'enroll' for a three month period, so if they screw you over (like they did me) the rest of your books are stuck for up to three months before you can change to another service. I guess the 'good' news is that if I somehow violate their rules again (though I didn't the first time 😡) they said they'd just cancel my whole account. No account means no books locked down, right?

Sigh.

Unfortunately, the difference between my income when I was on KU and now, trying to just sell the books, is day and night. I hoped that going to a con would create enough of a jump that I could see a difference, but I sold one book after the con ended, so that's a fail. I hoped that releasing new books would help, but that's a bust.

Which just goes to show that Amazon (which is totally not a monopoly) has that tight a grip on small authors. And for my family, it's a choice between me getting a different job (going back to writing as a hobby), or returning to KU, and as much as I want to stand on my principles, I want to write and feed my family more.

Which is all probably more than you wanted to know, but there it is, and TL;DR I'll be returning all my books to KU after Aria goes live, so I can put all of them on the system at once. That way, if things go sideways again, but I don't actually lose my account, I can pull them all at once next time.

Here's something fun for you, though: the print cover for Grimalkin! Yes, my favorite color is blue 🤣
