They are each about 2m by 2m, J-B. If I was building a new place, I would like them bigger!

I have made countless mistakes AS AN ADULT, Sue. I cringe when I remember some of them. But usually, we are not warned... it is one thing that motivates me to make videos about such things! (And wrote the book! :-D )

When we lived on Guam, we took a 2-week trip to Japan as a family. This was about 1962. I was about 8 and my sister was 4 or 5. We stayed a couple of nights in a hotel near Ginza, I think. Anyway, my folks went downstairs for dinner, but had dinner brought up to the room for us. After dinner, we decided to take a bath. The hotel staff had given us a bit of a tour earlier, so we knew where it was. However, no one has instructed we two girls in how to use the room. I remember it so clearly: the wooden slats for flooring, the shelves with towels and soap, the wooden tub (which both of us could fit in).
My folks told us later that they came back to the room and were alarmed to find us missing, until they heard the giggling and shrieking from down the hall. We had filled the tub with hot, soapy water and were having a gay old time.
I have no idea how they cleaned up after us, but no one ever said a word to us girls. It wasn't until I was an adult, and learned about it all, that I realized the disaster we must have created for the staff!

Really similar setup with the bucket and clean tub used to be very common in Vietnam as well. Almost like the "2 bucket method" of washing cars. But I think that stemmed from how up until not that long ago, most homes did not have running hot water, only cold.
They would have either similar where there was a big contraption heating the tub, or they would boil water elsewhere first then pour it in to the tub for warm bathing. So it was a way to keep the rinse water both clean and warm.
And of course, can't forget first seeing the bath house scene in Tokyo Drift :)
