COVID Surge in Japan

Comments

Not an attack, but a response: Masks work. Simple procedural blue hospital masks are rated at about 50% efficacy, meaning that they will filter 50% of what you breathe in, and out. KN95 masks are rated far higher, and properly fitted N95 masks highest of all. Here is the simple math behind masking: To use the least example, if you and I are both wearing procedural masks and in conversation with each other, my mask will filter 50% of what I exhale. Your mask will filter 50% of what you INhale. Thus, your mask will filter 50% of my 50%, meaning you would be exposed to 25% of the droplets that I have exhaled, ergo a 75% reduction in the risk of transmission. In my city in Canada, all mask mandates have been lifted. This was met with an immediate, and severe summertime spike in cases, ushering in a 7th wave. Last summer, on 14 July, there were 142 reported cases in my city, at a time when cases were closely monitored. This year, on the same date, when cases are reported only on a voluntary basis and far less closely monitored, there were 10,810. This is what happens when people abandon the idea of masking and carry on as normal. The Swedes attempted to establish a herd immunity at the outset of this pandemic. It didn't work. Tens of thousands fell ill. (However, it can be said at least that in carrying on as normal they didn't ruin their economy.) Thus, it would seem that the only way to destroy the virus is to deny it a host. Contrary to what you have suggested, the very way to ensure that it persists for years is to allow it to transmit, and in doing so mutate endlessly. The numbers clearly indicate that masking works. However, in Western countries which are not of a masking-culture the mask mandates have been rejected by large sections of the population, and so in all practicality the mandates have failed. Luckily, we are at a point where although the virus is easily transmitted, the effects seem to be no more harmful than the average flu. It seems we have come through the worst of it. Presently, in my country, we have more or less adopted an "every man for himself" approach: If you want to mask up, do so. If not, don't. We are attempting to move on, however in so doing we have brought about another wave. The correlation is very clear.

We must ALWAYS have a plan "B", right!

This is the last thing I wanted to hear at this point of my exchange procedures! I really, REALLY hope Japanese government doesn't close the borders again like they've done numerous times in the past in similar conditions. The COVID causes so much trouble if you catch it, but it also affects all of us who don't catch it, in the form of cautionary measures like you mentioned in the video! I have been fortunate enough to not have suffered through it yet, but if the borders get closed again, I am barred entry just like everybody else. Financial damage at this time would not be as high as it could be, as I have not booked my flight yet. But if they do decide to close the border - and then take their sweet time implementing that order - I could end up paying a lot of money for a bunch of nothing. I'd also have to return all the grant money I've been given, so nice going! Christ, this pandemic is really frustrating to deal with, isn't it? Nevermind catching the damn thing, life has become so unpredictable and unstable just because of the restrictions! I can't even imagine what it's like for business owners, who have no idea when or what new restrictions are going to come next, and how they affect their business operation. I feared something like this could happen at the very last moments, but I was a little sceptical. Well... it's times like these when you need those plan Bs and Cs! It's good to be prepared in advance, so that you know what to do if things don't go the way they should initially. Hopefully one day this nuisance will go away, so that we all can live our lives like normal again.

The rain must be a nice relief from the heat!

Know I will be attacked; masks work well, if N95 and well fitted. Most masks are not that. So mask wearing is allowing Covid to just pass-on little by little.............for years. My opinion, drop the masks, move on.

Sorry about all of this.
