Almost Anyone Can Teach English in Japan

Bribes? I'm sold. Now if they'll just let me into the country!

Over the years, I have met many foreigners whose English was weak, and when I asked what they do in Japan: "English teacher". As for how effective they are.. would depend on the "teacher" and the school, for sure. The students don't know the difference, of course.

I'm so surprised... I thought most times native speakers only were allowed to teach English in Japan. There was one private language institute 10-20 years ago who hired other nationalities, but it had poor reputation, I forgot the name... But this looks like another one. Are there many? Anyway, my impression is that due to the formal and unambitious way English is taught in the Japanese educational system, what learners really need in order to progress afterwards is heavy one-to-one practice of conversation at different levels, and in that case even learning from a non-native speaker with 95% English proficiency and fluency would be a big step forward. But if those guys are hired to do a job very similar to what teachers from Japan do, there won't be much progress. I'm curious about what classes in those businesses are like, what students say about them.
