As we continue our Hopeless Fountain Kingdom journey, I discuss Halsey's use of diction, simile, alliteration and more in this track!

HFK Analysis- "Don't Play"

Comments

I’m going to eras tour in July! And I wondered how you’d feel about the sound of this one. It grows on you, I promise! Blast it in your car at night sometime; it’s awesome

I hope you have so much fun!

I haven't, but I am 100% going to check it out now! Hopefully, it is on Amazon!

Oh and in the song Hurricane off badlands there’s a lyric that says “I went down to a place in Brooklyn where you tripped on LSD and I found myself reminded to keep you far away from me” so she could be realizing in don’t play that it’s another situation like that maybe!

Finally here but this song on the surface is like a badass bitch song that I get so hype for in the car lol it’s definitely a grower sonically and I knew you’d be cringing haha!! But I’ll share some things Halsey has said about the song and some fan theory. Halsey said: “‘Don't Play' was like really different for me and it's kinda like this Aureum House theme song. It's like don’t mess with us, we’re the bad team, the bad house, we could fuck you up if we wanted to. So it was kinda cool to get into that head space and write a song that was kind of cocky and about me moving on and being better on my own.” Love what you said about the painting and how when you look from far away it’s beautiful but up close it’s not everyone’s favorite and how you pull back to see the whole story! A lot of fans picked up on that too! The core of the song is that the ex was a drug user and partied all the time and Halseys getting over them now and zooming out and seeing how this is not something she wants to be involved in and seeing it for what it truly is. Many lyrics tie in with other songs, like you mentioned the cocaine reference that’s also in bad at love and 929 about their past lover being a heavy cocaine user. So there’s that lyric and “alone out in Saint Tropez” similar to the lyric from Alone “i stayed a night out in Paris where they don’t know my name” “Motherfucker don’t play with me”, connecting to Walls Could Talk with “now you gon play me like a violin” Halsey has mentioned dating multiple people with drug problems, she’s never mentioned herself having a hard time with them. Her first relationship on badlands has a lot to do with her exes being addicted to drugs like in the song colors you reacted to saying “i hope you make it to the day you’re 28 years old”, “everything is blue, his pills, his hands, his jeans” and then G Eazy in some songs on the Manic album. Im going off on a tangent but in the first song H ever wrote called Ghost she said “i don’t like them innocent, I don’t want no face fresh. Want them wearing leather, begging let me be your taste test” so she used to be very attracted to bad boys lol and I’m happy for her now to be in a healthy and happy relationship with a seemingly very good guy!

love the analysis! btw have you read Halsey's poetry book I Would Leave Me If I Could? Highly recommend!

I am traveling to see Taylor in Nashville! So excited!

I hope you have such an amazing time ❤️❤️❤️

Funny because it’s my favorite song on the album 🤣 But I love EDM and Electronic

I’m seeing Taylor in July in Seattle! Cannot wait!

Thank you for double checking! I definitely wouldn't have gotten that based on the text alone...especially considering the lines that follow the cocaine reference. However, it totally makes sense with the context you provided!

English Teacher KP

I double checked and HFK was released before Halsey dated G-Easy. But it’s reasonable to assume the speaker is the one doing lines in this song. And with the prevalence of drug use, they are not necessarily talking about the same person when referencing a specific drug in different songs (although making the connection is still important!)

I thought about the "play" thing as well! Very cool!

English Teacher KP

Awesome! I'm excited as well!

English Teacher KP

Interesting! Thanks for providing the article and context!

English Teacher KP

I do think both the alcohol and drug use is in reference to the speaker (although the partner presumably also does both). There’s also a 2018 pap picture of Halsey snorting cocaine on a yacht in Miami with G-Easy. They also talk about the relationship and doing drugs together in this article: https://www.billboard.com/music/pop/halsey-mac-miller-death-leave-relationship-9485211/ This song was released in 2017 so it might be about a previous relationship though

Something about her repeating "Play" and Romeo & Juliet being a play is so interesting to me. Also yes! I have tickets to see Taylor in Houston for the first time! I'm so excited!!
