Ethics vs Conservative Religion in the Therapy World

I love that some of our work is videos, I'm so proud of my little animations :D I thought this one was somewhat relevant to our community (the last section perhaps less so).

Also this reminds me of an observation I’ve heard about Christian fundamentalists. They’ll claim they’re willing to do anything for their faith but in practice they won’t accept the idea that they should ever have to give up anything (IE like having a particular job) in order to maintain their religion in a society of people who don’t share it. Like if there’s ever a conflict between society’s needs and their faith they’ll insist society accommodate them. I think this attitude comes from people having (incorrectly in my opinion) come to view religion as an immutable characteristic, rather than a personal choice.

2025-10-17 01:49:35 +0000 UTCWhen Drew McCoy, from Genetically Modified Skeptic, was going to university at a (accredited) christian college he took psychology. One day the lecturer asked his class what they'd do if they became professional counselors and were asked to take a queer client. Drew (still a fundamentalist at the time) said he would refer them to another counselor who was comfortable with their lifestyle. Thinking that was the only ethical answer. Apparently virtually everyone else in the class said they'd take the client and try to talk them out of their queer lifestyle during the sessions. based on that, gross as it is, I kind of suspect just having all christian fundamentalist counselors agree to refer queer clients would probably actually be an improvement on the status quo. Because I imagine what's actually happening is a lot fundamentalists are becoming counselors then abusing that position to do covert conversion therapy on any queer clients they get.
