We never get an exact conversion rate to any real-world currency, but based on usage it seems to be ABOUT equal to the Japanese yen from the time the series was made. At the time of the series, ¥1 was about equal to 1 US cent ($.01), so ￦1,000,000 would be about equal to $10,000. Woolongs show up as the currency in several other shows also directed by Shinichiro Watanabe. This has lead to theories about them all taking place in the same universe. Some of the theories I could believe, others are just trying too hard to line things up.
