New Anime Poll

Hi Lola and Milena! (I don't know how to send this to them, so I hope mods can help😅) I write this because I've noticed most of the anime you've reacted are shonen or seinen (for example: Haikyuu→Shonen; Attack on Titan→ Shonen; Death Note→Shonen; Frieren→Shonen; Fullmetal Alchemist→ Shonen; HunterXHunter→Shonen; Ranking of Kings →Shonen; Vinland Saga→ Seinen; Monster→Seinen) This is not an issue by itself (Vinland Saga is one of my favourite manga ever). That's just how the industry works; those are the ones who become famous/popular. Even if it's not a "problem", I'd recommend you to check shōjo and josei anime for a more broad experience. So, a bit of an explanation: Manga is published in magazines. The magazines are categorized in demographies. The demographies are: Shonen→young/teen boy Seinen→Adult man Shōjo→young/teen girl Josei→Adult woman Kodomo→Kids Inside every demography there are manga of MANY genres (So no, it's not "romance=girls". There's drama, fantasy, horror, adventure, and any genre you can imagine in each). Even within every demography, each magazine has different age groups (some shonen are more "mature", and others are more "childish"). All of this is just the TARGET. Once the manga is published, obviously anyone can read it and enjoy it regardless of gender. It's just a label. It can seem sexist to say that there's "manga for boys/girls", but as I said, it's just the target (every product sold anywhere, has a target, and it influences the way it's done, promoted, announced, etc). I'm a 24 year old nb-man, and i'm very aware of the patriarchal state of the world. Because of that, manga targeted to women are often LESS promoted, LESS adapted to anime (and when they are, often have mediocre adaptations, and almost always have just 1 season of 12 episodes, leaving the story unfinished). This is very sad, because there are MANY INCREDIBLY AMAZING stories that are invisibilized and ignored by the readers/watchers. Because of that, I want to recommend you some shōjo and josei anime that I think you would enjoy. SHŌJO: • Fruits Basket (2019) (61 episodes) (completed) Drama about a young girl dealing with life. A story about trauma, grief, found family, healing, and much more. • Revolutionary Girl Utena (1997) (39 episodes) (completed) Deconstruction of gender roles through "prince" and "princess" stereotypes. It's FULL of METAPHORES and SYMBOLISM, as it explores MYSOGINY and the suffering of women. • Natsume's Book of Friends (2008-2024. Still ongoing) (around 83 episodes) (there are more seasons expected). A story about healing. A fantastical tale about a boy growing up with the ability to see Yōkai (reatures from japanese folklore). Each one, with unique lifes. The main character is the definition of "MY BOY! MY BABY BOY!". • Yona of the dawn (2015) (24 episodes) Adventure, journey, trauma, action... The equivalent to One Piece. Sadly, even though Yona is one of the best selling manga ever, and being a LONG story with more than 50 volumes published... we only have one season for the anime. As I said, the industry prioritizes shonen😅🥲 • The Rose of Versailles (1979) (40 episodes) (complete). One of the most influential manga EVER, with an incredible adaptation to anime. Set in the French Revolution, we follow the story of Lady Oscar (a girl who has been raised as a boy, and becomes Commander of the Royal Guard) and Maria Antoinette (future Queen of France). A political drama, filled with fights, angst and social critique. • Banana Fish (2018) (24 episodes) (Completed) Crimes, Mafia, Drugs, Drama... set in New York in the 1980's. • Skip Beat! (2008) (24 episodes) (We are waiting for more seasons...🥲) A fun yet deep story ablut a girl trying to join the entertainment industry. Hilarious humor, and nice emotional exploration of each character's trauma. • Kageki Shôjo! (2021) (13 episodes) (We are waiting for more seasons...🥲) A story about girls joining a theatrical academy, to become performers. The main characters are sunshine, and it's super fun! It has some triggering stuff (it deals with sexual abuse, alimentary disorders, and more...). The manga just keeps getting better, so I hope they do another season... • Nana (2006) (47 episodes) (The anime is incomplete, but the manga is incomplete too, so it counts as complete, with a unique ending). The story of two very different girls who share the same name, and meet in a train to Tokyo. One wants to become a rock star, the other wants to be a housewife. A very deep and painful narration of their lifes, surrounded by flawed characters (like themselves). JOSEI: • Chihayafuru (2012-2020) (74 episodes) (We are waiting for more seasons...🥲) A sport anime about a japanese game (Karuta), but at the same time it's MUCH MUCH MUCH MORE. It can't be described with words, you have to experience it. I would say that it's the equivalent of Haikyuu, but even better in almost every aspect. • Kids on the Slope (2012) (12 episodes) Musical drama set in the 1960's. About Jazz, family, friends, and social unjustices. • Paradise Kiss (2005) (12 episodes) By the same mangaka who made Nana. This one is about a girl who wants to learn about the fashion industry. • Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu (2016) (25 episodes) Deep drama, around the japanese storytelling traditional performances od Rakugo • Natsuyuki Rendezvous (2012) (11 episodes) (Complete) A fantastical story about healing and mourning the dead. It uses some supernatural elements, and has a unique narration style. About an adult young man who falls in love with an woman (a bit older than him) who works on a flower shop. But then, he starts seeing rhe ghost of her dead husband!? There's also Uramichi Oniisan (dark humor), and Nondame Cantabile (orchestral drama?), and many others... Anyway, I'm sorry for this long text. I know it might be hard for these to win polls, as the most famous are usually shonen and seinen... but I hope you'll give them a chance either way! Thank you!

In my case, the first version I watched was the dub, but not the English dub. Years later, I watched the subbed version and enjoyed it even more. But you’re right.

If you watched Cowboy Bebop in sub first, it makes sense why you think it’s better than dub. If you watched dub first, it makes sense why you’d think it’s better than sub. In my opinion the dub fits better because of the western influences of the show and the English actors so perfectly fit their characters.

Often the first version you watch of something can be the preferred version. This can also be said for those who watch sub first. And that is true of various other tellings of a story. Like how you have some people that prefer the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime over Brotherhood because it was first.

Today, I rewatched some episodes of Cowboy Bebop. I watched the English dub version and then compared some scenes with the sub. My conclusion is: it’s not bad, but I still prefer the original Japanese audio version. Maybe people prefer the dub because of nostalgia—it might have been the first version they watched when they were younger, which is why they feel a strong connection to it. Anyway, I don’t mind if people choose to watch the dub or the sub. But if there were a poll, I would vote for the sub.

Yeah, i was manly talking about how they handled Lukako's charecter. Aside from that, i don't like the "harem" aspects of the show and nowadays the comedy of it doesn't hit the same way it used to. Maybe i just got older and more sour. But i actually changed my vote later for Steins;Gate. I am curious to see the girls react to it, and maybe that would respark my love for the show. It is really nostalgic for me.

while it's not the type of show that evokes intense emotional reactions as you said, imo it really excels at conceptually amazing (and unforgettable) emotional scenes that could've easily been drawn out for longer episodes to bask in the emotions much longer and intensely, scenes so well-crafted that when you think about how a certain character has lived their life so far, there's so much off-screen emotional potential to feed off on, but its just not what the show is going for, and we love it for what it is. idk if I made sense lol, sleep deprived as hell.

I actually somwhat agree, (mostly from a different viewpoint tho) but mostly if we're talking about the anime (its still great tho). lmk what are the aspects without spoilers if you can (aside from lukako scene). Its not perfect, it does have plotholes, but for me, I can still enjoy it for all it gives in return. ideally, I always recommend the vn first, a lot of people who loved the anime first time around end up somewhat letdown on the second watch, and thats natural, because the studio's focus is mainly on trying to cram the whole story in (main route) not as much on understanding and getting attached to the characters, (you still do imo but to less than 10% of the vn's power) otherwise it wouldn't have cut out most of okabe's amazing monologues, this and how super fast paced the anime is, imo distances you so, so much from the characters than what could've been. imo the anime serves mostly as an introduction, whenever I miss the series, its always the vn for me. its where you really get to hangout with the characters and think deeply about all the cool science and theories, (which was also over 90% cut out) and experience the story in full glory and emotionality.

I totally get what you mean. There is only live action shows that I only watch in sub ( with few exceptions) but I love watching animeted shows in dub french and in sub ( arcane for example). I watch anime in sub most of the time because the dub french are not that good in most cases lol but I do enjoy a few in french. Like I said, my problem about dub it's not that this is bad it's just I'm not an English speaker so if I'm going to watch something in dub it's not going to be in English that's all. I'm really not used to watch animes in dub English and even if they can be good, I can't for some reason get really into an anime if it's in English.

as much as i love bebop, i voted for dororo since that’s the one i think these girls would most likely enjoy out of the list, but i’m really heartbroken on the exclusion of A Place Further than the Universe from this current poll. when i think of anime to follow frieren i always try to remove “action heavy” shows and to me bebop is action heavy. it’s the first anime that is 10/10 to me since i’m a huge scifi fan but in terms of reactions to a show, i think A Place Further than the Universe would be better because it’s short and sweet and tells a complete story in 13 episodes

These shows are great, but I can't help but think that they would adore a show like "A Place Further than the Universe" more tbh. It's only 13 episodes, and is such an underrated impactful gem that I'll carry with me for the rest of my life. The themes of utter yearning, loneliness and insecurity, and female friendship and camaraderie are so beautiful, and the show is such a hug for your soul and a tribute to life worth living. Unfortunately I don't see it winning any polls any time soon unless like someone said they do themed polls :( (and for those who have seen it I also recommend watching this video essay called 'Girls on Fire" by the youtube channel Beyond Ghibli, made me cry all over again lol) I voted for Steins Gate personally, even though it seems to have lost once again lol. If the girls ever get to it one of these years I would like many others recommend the dub since it's a rare case of it being better than sub imo (same could be said for Cowboy Bebop)

I recently re-watched steins;gate and like you said many aspects of this show aged like milk, and I have some issues with the characters (a particularly scene is very disturbing), however, I'm really curious about their discussions. I still think it's a show that can give a lot to talk about.

It was short because it never got a second season, not sure why. If we're recommending stuff from that author, I would recommend Durarara since it got to finish. The author did get a third anime but i think it's still ongoing.

I have seen a lot of people praise Steins;Gate in the comments. Honestly, i wish i could agree. Steins;Gate used to be my favorite show back when i was a kid, but nowadays i just get frustated with it. So many aspects of this show have NOT aged well. Also, i hope someday the girls include Madoka Magica in the polls. It is such a good short anime, and i think it fits their tastes.

Mmm I think it's pretty clear that Cowboy Bebop has been the most voted option consistently since the start of this poll. This is also consistent with the results of previous polls, where Cowboy Bebop always maintained a slight lead. A sudden change at the last moment is unlikely to be taken seriously as a legitimate win for Steins;Gate

I haven't seen all the titles you listed, so I'll only say what I know, but at least Ash and Eiji and Homura and Madoka are not homosexuals, nor are they in a homosexual relationship. (I do believe, however, that it is a work that some will see as homosexual.)

Unless there another Frieren-type show debuts, I expect Steins;Gate will win the next poll after Cowboy Bebop. I'm not sure on the timing, but I think that should be around the same time as when Monster will take over the long anime spot. Monster and Steins;Gate are a decent pairing.

Being episodic does not make something not great to react to. Last Airbender has a lot of episodic aspects to it and that doesn't hurt it for reactors. I appreciate your passion for other options, but Cowboy Bebop is as good of show for reactions as the rest.

Cowboy bebop being a very episodic anime is not the best option to react to it. My first choice was Your Lie in April, I think it's the one they would like the most and something different for having music. But seeing the way things are going, I'm going to change it for Steins Gate :(

As someone who watched it both ways, part of it is the translation yeah, but also enjoying different kinds of performances or inflections in the way characters talk. Its interesting you mention not enjoying the FMAB reactions as much because they were in English, because for me the way the English dub is translated adds some great bits that aren't in the original Japanese. For example, I really like Riza Hawkeye's english VA and the more sarcastic or dry tone she gives to some of her lines. Like, there's a part where she shoots Gluttony and in the original Japanese she basically just states that "I shot him in the head but he still kept going". While in English it's a little bit of a joke "Well, I shot him in the head and he didn't seem to mind." In the sub, her voice is a lot...sweeter, I suppose? And it's not bad at all - the actress does a great job - but for me it fits Riza less well than her English VA. But I feel the opposite about other characters - I love Romi Park's take on Ed for example. So, I feel similarly about Cowboy Bebop and SteinsGate. And Fruits Basket if that ever actually gets selected. There are performances and aspects that I love in both, and I think it's really cool to see the different interpretations actors give to the same characters.

Anime refers to animation produced in Japan and cartoons is a broader term that refers to animated works typically associated with Western productions. Hence, the target audience is completely different; thus they cannot be used as synonyms. You learn something everyday!

i think you would love steins gate so much, you would love our main 3 characters so much. you will adobt one from ep1 btw. you will find it absolutely precious. moments of unexpected warmth that will hit harder, feeling a deep sense of comfort between them, and it carries a heavier emotional weight that can feel more genuine than romantic love or so. and its these type of relationships i find little in shows in general that i need more of. i hope st still stays in you radar! Since Bebop's victory is imminent, I will leave some personal observations (shared from some that I saw here in the comments) the visuals, the characters, the music and the melancholic vibe are really a highlight of the Anime and something very different from what the girls have seen before, but perhaps the way the episodes are directed is not to their liking and this could be a problem at the beginning Yes, I also think it's not an Anime that you can draw much discussion from and most reaction channels would have a hard time trying to talk about, but LM has already shown that they are very capable of doing that with any show

I think Cowboy Bebop is a bit overrated, too episodic for my taste. But overall atmosphere, visuals, godlike OST make up for it. Characters are pretty good too but I guess I expected more. If you're into old school action movies, be it Hollywood or some Eastern kung fu, and into noir melancholic atmosphere I think you'd enjoy it. But not sure if it's that good for discussion. I do agree with some that say that it has some similarities with Frieren. Reflections about how you live after the 'main story' ended. But in a more melancholic way, with all the typical noir attributes. I’d prefer Eng Dub tbh even though English isn’t my first language and my first experience with Cowboy Bebop was in Sub. It’s just a really good Dub and it fits with the show's mostly western vibes. But I wouldn’t be against Sub either. Tbh I'm not sure if I'm even gonna watch those reactions (sorry). I gave my vote for YLIA, I just like it more even though it’s a much simpler and pretty obvious story. But execution of it is one of the best. And it’s probably one of the most up LM’s alley from the list. S;G is also not a bad choice, especially with Eng Dub. It adapts original dialogue pretty heavily but in a good way I think. Especially if the viewer isn’t that familiar with Japanese otaku culture. I haven't seen Banana Fish so I don't know if they'd like it but from what I've heard of it they'd probably enjoy it. Not a fair fight though since it goes against such popular heavy hitters as Bebop, S;G and even YLIA to some extent. Banana Fish (and Dororo) are too niche compared to those. Dororo I haven’t seen since it aired so it’s been a while, I don’t remember that much. Only that that were a few really good episodes especially in the first half but overall it was like 7-7.5/10. Either way it wouldn’t stand a chance with such heavy hitters. Even against Banana Fish.

I love mha though and knowing them, they will fall in love immediately for most of the characters and I'm pretty sure they'll enjoy the story. I think that the " problem" here is more that they don't have enough slots for animes. I know everyone loves the bebop dub and it's undeniably one of the better ones out there, but I still think the original Japanese voice cast is easily better, without a doubt one of my favorite voice casts of all time. I mean I think they'll probably still like it regardless because they seem to like overt tearjerky beats. But there really isn't great depth of character. It's a pretty standard shonen that goes for standard shonen character, emotional, and tragedy tropes, with pronounced sad OST to help enhance the emotions (which i like though, anime piano OST slaps hard). Even if you don't know this term, you have enjoyed it with Levi, Tsukishima and Serie on this channel, what would they have in common to be called that? There is even a cuter version of this type of character and a great example is Edward Elric, I will call it the 'cute tsundere'. But what if I told you that you can have not only one 'cute tsundere' per anime, but two, and that they can be your main duo, and that said anime can have a great focus on the interactions and dynamics of both. I disagree about Cowboy Bebop. It's not an action-oriented anime; it is more character-driven than Cyberpunk. If there is one concept that defines Cowboy Bebop, it is melancholy. They are all great anime, but each has its own concerns when it comes to watching. Cowboy bebop, while very cool, is quite different from the shows you have seen so far, and I think it's more the type of animation you enjoy for its style rather than for its weepiness. Cyberpunk might be a little closer. Steins;Gate is an inspiring anime, but I am concerned about the extent to which it correctly translates Japan's unique otaku culture. It also has some unique sexuality in parts, although not extreme. I usually recommend Steins, but this time I vote for Your lie in april. I think the dub just became iconic because it's such an old show and a lot of people (Americans) remember watching it in english on adultswim and Toonami so thats what they got used to. Also it kinda helps that the atmosphere is pretty western so the english dubbing just seems to fit naturally I suppose.

People are probably asking for the English dub because it is how they first saw it on cable, where that was the only way you could see it since Cowboy Bebop aired before streaming and even YouTube existed. Also the English dub is what made a lot of people anime fans to begin with.

Out of these anime, I'm voting for Cowboy Bebop. My generation over hypes it way to much, and it didn't hold up as much as i wanted on rewatch; but for how important it is to anime history it's a show anime fans should still watch. Way before Attack on Titan created a whole new generation of anime fans (wasn't it L&M's first anime too?), Cowboy Bebop was the show that blew my generation's collective minds and more than anything else made Anime so popular in the west. Some people even argue that the anime industry might not be anywhere near as huge as it is today without the success of Cowboy Bebop in the west. Is it the best anime ever like a lot of anime fans my age still go on about? No, but just like movie nerds will never stop talking about Citizen Kane, anime nerds will never stop talking about Cowboy Bebop.

For me, I always enjoy both sub and dub. I think certain fans getting all gate-keepy about which is better is weird. I like seeing different actors takes on a scene, and I like the different ways things can be translated. Sometimes translation choices can really add a fun element to a show that isn't present in the original, or a different kind of performance can make it feel different in a fun way. I think the FMA Brotherhood dub is a good example of this: there are several lines that weren't in the original Japanese that were made funnier in the English dub. ("I wasn't trying to save your ass but the body of the young lord!"/"Well, it's the same ass.") Or Riza's English VA giving her a sarcastic edge that I think really fits her, but isn't present in the Japanese dub. This is despite me preferring certain performances, such as Romi Park as Ed over he-who-shall-not-be-named. Kaguya-sama Love is War is another good example: the sub and dub are quite different in some ways, but they're both equally funny imo. So, I feel similarly about the dubs of both SteinsGate and Cowboy Bebop. I've seen and enjoyed both, but I think certain choices made with the English translations really add another extra something to the characters and dialogue.

I have watched all the anime in the poll except for Banana Fish, but I don't think they'll really love any of these except for Banana Fish based on what I've heard, so I'll be voting for it. Cowboy Bebop is cool but they don't strike me as the type to enjoy episodic series. You Lie in April is decent but Lola will see where the plot is going by episode 3. Dororo has some great episodes, but half of it is "monster of the week" stuff, which gets repetitive pretty quickly. Steins;Gate is on my top 5, but the anime is too centered around otaku culture, I don't think they'll understand half of what the characters represent or are talking about.

I voted Steins;Gate because it's been on the poll since the very beginning and deserves to win, but Cowboy Bebop is truly a life-changing experience. First of all, each episode is unique and even feels more like a movie than a regular anime episode, the music / storytelling are insane and the development of the characters is just too good. Legitimately once in a lifetime story that stood the test of time.

I feel conflicted about dub versions. In my opinion, dub is only appealing to native speakers. If I’m going to watch an anime or show in a language other than my own, I prefer to watch the original version. Otherwise, why would I choose the English dub over, for example, my own language version? Or why then LM don't watch the serbian dub instead? However, if they conduct a poll and people prefer the dub, I guess I’ll watch it anyways

Really really really nervous about people’s expectations. That can ruin the watching of a show. I’ve never heard of a single one of those shows. Arcane is first animated show I have ever watched, and unfortunately I believe it will be the last. Not sure what about arcane grabbed me but I just can’t handle animation. Have a very hard time connecting with the characters and stories. So I’ll leave my vote out of it. I’m just here for the second season of severance. Also will they be watching that week to week as the episodes come out? Or will they be waiting till it’s over and then watching it for 9 weeks?

The English dub for Cowboy Bebop is a must. It's highly regarded as better than the original and one of the best ever, the same as Fullmetal Alchemist. Steins;Gate dub is also a must, IMO.

That is the Problem. Too many shows are overlapping. After Sopranos we need again a few weeks to thin out the list, because Severance, Invincible, The Last of Us, The Bear, Fallout, ... and many more will come in the next 12 months, and not all can fit in the short show slot. Excited to see which anime wins! If you’re ever thinking about reacting to a different style of animated show, Bojack Horseman could be interesting. It does deal with heavy themes, but it’s very well written and has a great mix of humor and emotional depth. That said, it’s not for everyone, especially early on, but I think it could make for some great discussions if you gave it a shot

I noticed a lot of people recommended Fruits Basket on an earlier reaction video. Have they already seen it? Did they rule it out because it's too long? In any case I think they would love it given the way they love analyzing relationships. Anyway, lots of really good shows in this poll. Hopefully they enjoy. Cowboy Bebop appears to be taking a pretty commanding lead.

Please watch your lie in April, it is the epitome of a gut wrenching romance coming off age story. I‘ve been following you guys for years now and I know that you would both ADORE this series. The characters are the heart of this series and their dynamics, development and conclusion make this series an absolute 10/10. I’ve watched over 200 anime in my life and there are only 4 that I would call perfect, but your lie in April is one of them. This series will make you guys so happy and it will heal you but at the same time it will make you cry and break you at the end. Believe me, your lie in April is a must watch
