You’re absolutely right! Thinking back on it, I think a better term would have been “problematic”. I just think that out of all the people that could call Illumi out on his bs, it’s funny that Togashi chose Hisoka.

I know right. I started it last autumn and finished it 1 month ago. Cried at the end it easily around halfway in the series became the best show I’ve ever watched. And mind you I’ve watched a lot of shows. So much politics, history and philosophy in it on a level ordinary people can understand. I mean there’s a reason it’s in the top 10 best anime’s of all times on most review sites.

What an interesting take on Illumi you guys brought to the table! I very rarely see any reactor actually paying attention to detail as much as you two, and it's so *chefs kiss*. Killua and Illumi certainly do have a very complex and toxic relationship, but the key point here is how self unaware Illumi is, and why he is the way he is. We have been spectators of Killua's issues and traumas for so long that we've kind of forgotten that all the Zoldyck children must have gone more or less through the same stuff as he did. The fact that he genuinely believes to be the one Killua loves most after spending years manipulating and torturing him, indicates just how messed up his conception of love is. A conception that most probably was taught to him by Silva and Kikyo while growing up. Also, it was genius of Togashi to make Hisoka (another painfully self unaware and messed up character) point out how ridiculous Illumi sounds.

I don’t think you can just move a large minority of people like that just by flat writing. Like One Punch Man is flat writing but literally every character is development for the story. JJK is not the type of show the girls will enjoy. After watching the two seasons of JJK, it feels like a standard shonen with a predictable plot and a lack of storytelling and good dialogue writing. I admit it has some interesting characters, but they have almost no meaningful development, and the rest of the secondary characters and random minor villains are usually flat and stereotypical. Entire episodes are dedicated to unnecessary fight scenes that, besides the flashy animation, add nothing to the plot or character arcs. After all the hype, The Shibuya Arc, in particular, was really disappointing. From Season 2, the Hidden Inventory arc was significantly better in comparission. So I don't understand why people says is the better arc for JJK.

I think you are right, but given that they are westerners I think it can still be serviceable for humanizing "Nanika". That and the fact that Alluka and "Nanika" sounding similar can make a interesting phonetic connection between the names of the two beings residing inside Alluka's body, I think.

Alluka's power not being specified as Nen is a good choice imo. It reminds me of Thus Spoke Kinhibe Rohan. That might be a good recommendation for a short anime, it's only 4 episodes.

Although, technically it only sounds like a name to us westerners. Nanika means "something" in Japanese. So, I think the humanization is more a subjective thing, rather than the show wanting to do it.

Can we stop for a moment and reflect on how the author is so creative with the concepts of each arc? Like, a video game with cards, ants that absorb human genes, a being that can grant wishes through equivalent exchanges... I could continue with the next arcs, but it would be a spoiler. Togashi is one of the most creative mangakas out there.

I haven’t watched Haikyuu nor Monster but heard really good things about them. Unfortunately tho I disagree about the writing about JJK while I don’t believe it’s as good as HxH , it’s not far off when it comes to story building & character development. I hate how JJK is known for its flashy fights because it actual has a good story plot with good characters but hey that’s just my opinion.

I think the issue most of us have with JJK is it's pretty surface level shounen. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy it a lot cause the fights are flashy and the characters enjoyable to watch. But it doesn't have nearly the level of character writing as HxH, Haikyuu or Monster, and good character writing is what we know L&M enjoy the most about these shows.

Honestly I just threw the titles of the Big 3 out there for clarification reasons, I don't expect them to ever touch One Piece or Naruto, I'd never hope for either of those they're just too damn long. Just FYI guys, this is off topic from HxH but I know you said a couple episodes ago you'd never watch any of the Big 3 (One Piece, Naruto & Bleach) but I wanna mention that although the original Bleach show has 366 episodes, a giant chunk of that is filler that doesn't need to be watched (you'd be left with a little under 200eps without the recent arc). Not saying it should go in the next poll cause you guys are just about finished with a long show already, but I wouldn't rule it out in future ones down the line given, minus the filler, it'll be roughly the length of HxH which you've made it through and loved

This is a spoiler----> there's a scene later where Killua cries when Illumi asks him to kill him and Illumi is happy with the idea of being killed by Killua

Yeah the rules are bit confusing at first so I don’t blame you if get confused about how Alluka’s powers work. Now the family is sort hinting “that something…(Nanika)” came from somewhere else.. but I don’t remember if Nanika powers are confirmed as nen or not since it’s been a while since I watched this arc. Man I’m sad this is almost over… hoping the anime comebacks after we get more manga chapters.. hopefully this year if Togashi is feeling healthy.

No spoiler but the subtext around Alluka’s gender is that she can be interpreted as trans or at least identify as she/her and only Killua respects that. The rest of her family treats her as a “he” or an “it”. It’s a subtle way of storytelling that can be interesting for the whole plot and the whole characterization of Alluka, but it’s already revealing about how Alluka is perceived and “loved” by her family, and the difference between Killua, and the rest of the Zoldycks. A very interesting and original take of the author about gender and, more generally, being treated as “other-worldly”.

Although the version you are watching translates the name of the "thing" living inside Alluka as "something" many versions translate it as if the word was a name. "Nanika". Which I think actually humanizes that part of Alluka to the viewer.

When you wondered "someone voted for Gon" actually there is an explanation. Something that was in the manga but for some reason it miss here. People knows about the "heroic" action of Netero and Gon during the battle against the ants, they don't know the details but they surely know about the fact they "died" as heroes.
