As an American, yeah, this was never taught to me, unfortunately. Had to learn it through this show lol. We just don't learn much in general about anything that isn't America and its inception, and general history that involves America (such as both World Wars). To be fair, I didn't take any extra history courses, so it's possible it's covered in those; but yeah, these things weren't taught at all in the general required history courses.

It's definitely NOT common knowledge. At least not in North America.

For me, what's make Jhon a good character, is that it's easier for us (being raised in the occidental culture) to relate to him, than Mariko or Toronaga who are part of this new word .
Also the treaty that Jhon was talking about, is the Treaty of Tordesillas but also the treaty of Saragossa which completed the first one to include territories found in the Pacific Ocean such as Japan or the Philipines.

But in the post show commentary they kept mentioning how John Blackthorn hates Christians. Overall i dont think they were paying that much attention to the show. Their commentary is usually pretty good. But they missed or misunderstood very important concepts… such as the fact that Blackthorn didnt call Toranaga his enemy. Quite the opposite. He was offering to be his ally.

You should know the distinction between catholic or Protestant at the time is really important there was many wars over these two types of Christianity. One was the thirty years war which saw the death of millions all over what type of Christianity was supposed to dominate.

They figured it out this episode. They said they're the third type Orthodox so they understand the Catholic Protestant dynamic.

Copy paste of a comment I posted last episode where I explain what I understand the show seems to be about since I think you missed it.
Ladies you read “Protestants” as parliament at the start. Smh lol
NOT THE SAME. Remember Martin Luther who caused Protestant reformation well that divided Europe for a really long time in which the two religious blocks were mortal rivals competing for power.

The show is based on the Portuguese and later Dutch trading and missionary missions or the so called Nanban trade. This explains how Portugal and later replaced by the Dutch were the only European nations allowed to trade and stay on Japan (Japan wasn’t a country yet but many smaller kingdoms fighting which later will lead to the Sengoku Jidai a civil war era in Japan) but this led to technology exchanges with Japan. You can read more on it here since I’m guessing it’s about this: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanban_trade

Here it is. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Tordesillas
Definitely in the top 10 most important treaties of all time in terms of its future consequences and part in slavery.

I do know it and it’s taught in gymnasium as well as in university here in Sweden. Don’t remember if it was taught in elementary school or whatever it’s called in English.
I also thought it was common knowledge.

Almost all English is actually them speaking Portuguese. John Blackthorne and his men are the only people in all of Japan that speak English. John being the only one of his men that speak Portuguese.

I dont want to come off as a know it all but i just want to say that I am very surprised by folks not knowing that Spain and Portugal split up the world between themselves. I’ve seen many reactors express surprise when this came up in Shogun.
I thought this part of history was common knowledge and taught as part of high school and middle school history. It explains why Brazil speaks Portuguese and the rest of South America does not. (The dividing line cuts through eastern brazil. So any south american countries west of it were in Spain’s part of the world and off limits to Portugal.) This makes me wonder what other important aspects of (western) history are no longer taught.

Right I was going to say similarly regarding the word “enemy”. When referring to Toranaga, Blackthorne was basically saying that he wouldn’t want an enemy such as him, because he wouldn’t stand a chance. He was more or less praising Toranaga and recognizing his strength/standing.

I love how the show throws you into the world and doesn't wait around for you to catch up. The audience is just as confused and disoriented as Blackthorne. To clarify: Blackthorne wasn't calling Toranaga an enemy; he was calling the Portuguese priest his enemy, because England is currently at war with Portugal. He is worried that the priest will not translate honestly because they are enemies. (The priest in the village in episode one pulled this trick.)
Later, in the garden, his argument is that they have a common enemy -- the Portuguese want to overthrow Japanese rule and install a Catholic ruler -- so Toranaga should be his ally.

The treaty they mentioned is real. The Treaty of Tordesillas was signed between Portugal and Spain in 1494 after Columbus returned to Europe from America
