(ARTICLE) How to Overcome the Guilt and Shame of Selling
Added 2022-05-04 14:28:53 +0000 UTCEverything we do in life is a result of a transaction, a sale.
A relationship - somebody has to be sold on that
If a baby is born - somebody had to be sold on why they should make a child with the other person.
If someone gets a job - a sale took place, the employer and the employee had to sell each other on why they would be the great candidate for the work to work or have them work under.
If someone eats food - a sale took place because someone had to sell that meal.
Everything that happens on this planet, a sale has to take place.
Even if you’re someone with fans or you have an audience of people who are subscribed to you, a sale took place.
The device you are listening to me on right now, that item was sold to you.
And things are not always sold with money, sometimes your attention and your time is what people are after.
Everything you are wearing right now, was sold to you.
The building that you are inside of right now, was sold to you.
If you’re on public transportation, you had to pay to use that public transportation
If you’re in a car, someone sold you to petrol you need to use to get your car to function.
If you’re going to work, you sold yourself to the employer in why you was to be hired
If YOU are the boss, someone had to sell YOU on why they was the person to be hired so they can get the job and work for you.
Even if you’re someone who works a normal job, you are selling yourself to your boss on why they shouldn’t fire you.
You have to make a sale on coming to work on time, because if you came to work 3 hours late, then you might be selling yourself to get fired.
So by showing up, you are selling yourself.
Even if what you are selling is your time and just your physical presence you are still making a sale.
Many people who have a business struggle with the shame of charging their desired prices for their work. If the problem of shame and guilt is not resolved then many of these business owners will find themselves stuck and barely even covering profit margins.
The real reason why you have an issue selling your products and services has nothing to do with the customer or the marketplace.
It has nothing to do with people being able to afford it or not.
The real reason you have issues selling your stuff is because you have issues with actually offering and selling things
Not you having a challenge OF selling things - you have an issue WITH selling things
In other words, you find it very uncomfortable putting something out there and telling people...
"hey, it cost this much money"
And then taking their money in exchange for what you are providing them with.
You have a problem with that process and that is why you are struggling to sell.
So today I'm going to write about how to get over the guilt of selling your things.
Any of you who is trying to make sales…but are failing…..it is not because you don’t t have the right strategy or tactics.
It’s mainly because your mind is not in the right place.
You are fearful and afraid of the rejection, which may come from your audience.
You are afraid of negative feedback from your audience because you’ve tried to sell something and they’re a bunch of freeloaders who are getting mad at you because you're trying to sell something them and it exposes the fact that they dont wana spend money for what you have to offer.
You are afraid of negative feedback from your audience because maybe they’ll buy your product and won’t end up liking it which then starts making you doubt the price you set it at.
So you are afraid of looking like a greedy bastard because you're trying to sell something to people and you’re selling to people who don’t have any money.
In other words, you’re trying to market and sell your products to broke people.
Never sell things to people who don't have money Because they’ll often make you feel like it's wrong to sell something. People who actually have money will never make you feel that way.
So you’re afraid of being labelled as a greedy person by broke people because they most likely can’t afford what you are selling and they’re gonna complain about anything being sold because they want everything for free.
If you plan on making money within business, you need to get over the fear of selling something simply because you don't want to look like you are a greedy person.
Often times, this leads to people short selling themselves.
So now they try to rationalise why they are short selling their products and services.
They start saying shit like…….
ohh I didn’t have a lot of money
Ohh I dont want people thinking that im just trying to be greedy.
Ohh I couldn’t have afforded something like this 5 years ago
Ohh I probably can’t afford this myself right now ….If I wasn’t trying to sell it
You don’t have to be able to afford what you are selling
I repeat - YES, YOU - don't have to be able to afford what you are selling.
There’s loads of high ticket sales people….who are selling things worth in the hundreds of millions.
What, you reckon everything that is being sold for millions or even in the hundreds of millions is sold by someone who has that much in their bank ?
Fuck no.
Yes, some of those sale people are doing EXTREMELY well financially but they mainly make the bunch of their income through commission of selling those very expensive things.
So for example…..
A high ticket sales person who makes a 0.5% commission from a 70Million pound sale will receive £350,000 just for that 1 sale. And a 1% commission will increase that £700,000
That doesn’t necessarily mean that sales person was able to afford a 70 million pound product even-though the person they sold it to, could.
So don't think that everything you are selling that you yourself have to be able to afford it because it’s a limit belief system.
Don’t hold yourself back when it comes to selling…. You are in business.
You are in the business of making money.
You are in the business of selling
You are in the business of getting your products and services into the hands and minds of the people need it.
This is the business you are in.
When you sign up for entrepreneurship, that’s the game you stepped into.
If you don't have your mind right about this then you will always be facing guilt about selling something.
And when you feel guilty about selling you will never sell at your best possible capacity …..
which means you will always be doing yourself a disservice when it comes to the money you need to be making and I would assume you got into business to make money.
But if You're self sabotaging yourself by feeling fearful and guilty about selling then you are doing a disservice to your own business.
The real source of your guilt stems from the fear of that negative feedback you might get.
Some of you entrepreneurs operate this way right now and it’s the very thing that’s holding you back.
Because you feel like you don't wana charge people ”too much money”
You don’t wana charge them the rates you actually wana be making.
So then even when you do make a sale, you feel like you short sold yourself because you’re not making as much as you should be.
Also stop calling your products and services CHEAP.
Do you know what ‘cheap’ means? whenever someone says they are charging a cheap price……
It USUALLY means (not all the time) but it USUALLY means that they’re undercharging for their stuff - that’s what cheap means.
Cheap means you’re charging less that you actually want to.
And you call it cheap because you feel guilty about asking for or taking money.
This habit will hurt your business it will also cause you to be loosing out on money and at the very worse it will keep you broke and will run you out of business.
So you have to stop having these pre conceived thoughts about what someones spending power is, you have absolutely no idea what another person is willing to spend for something that they really want.
So you shouldn’t be making that judgement on how much they can afford to spend on their behalf.
A lot of people set their prices at a level because they don't think most of the people who are at a certain level can afford to pay a certain amount of money,
Guys….
If they don’t really want it anyone can come up with any excuse to not pay for something.
Someone could be a millionaire and come up with a reason to why they don’t wana pay for a product which only cost £5
It’s not that they can’t afford it, they just don't want to pay for it so they’ll come up with a reason to not buy it.
Someone could be completely broke and manage to find £1,000 if they really needed it.
So it’s all about the value judgement. It’s about how much we value certain things which is what decides how much we are willing to pay for it.
So your job isn’t to guess how much money someone has. Your job as an entrepreneur is to determine how much VALUE are you offering with your thing and then charging a price that is in proportion with the value that you are giving people.
Now if you don’t have answers to how much value you’re giving people or the market you are selling to then you will have a challenge when it comes to knowing what kind of prices you should be setting.
A lot of people set their prices at a cheap price thinking that people will do business with them simply because their product or service is ‘cheap”
Setting a cheap price does not lead to a bunch of sales.
Also, for my final point.
High quality people WANT to have things sold to them.
High quality people WANT to buy things.
Why? Because they can afford to.
One of the main reasons you’re having a challenge selling your stuff is because you’re selling to people who ain’t got no fucking money.
Stop selling to people who don't have money and your problem of feeling guilty will no longer be there.
If you're selling to people with no money then you will always face challenges with selling because they’ll always find some kind of way to make an objection due to them not having any money.
So they're gonna come up with a bunch of excuses to why they can’t buy from you.
Many people have a problem with selling because they're operating by an inaccurate formula and are selling to people who don’t have money.
Do not sell to people who are broke.
They can’t buy from you because they don’t have any money.
Sell to people who have the money and that guilt will disappear.
Many entrepreneurs will look at themselves as a person who doesn’t have money.
Just because you probably grew up without much money you still see yourself as that childhood person who was broke. So then when its time to sell, you see yourself as a broke person so now you feel uncomfortable approaching people who aren’t broke.,
And this why you can’t sell anything.
High quality people WANT to have things sold to them
They want to pay for the best product which gives them the best results for what they’re after.
If you believe what you have to offer is the best then it’s your responsibility to sell only to the people who can pay for it.
And sell it at a price that you want to sell it at.
Not a cheap price because cheap prices usually attract cheap customers aka people who are going to be a pain to deal with.
High quality people are not Interested in averaged priced things when it comes certain areas of their life.
Just to be clear..
That doesn’t mean they’re just gonna go around spending loads of money on everything just because they have it.
They will spend in the areas in which it matters to them.
As a matter of fact it’s human nature to have an area of their life where they spend way more than they need to simply because they wanted to
So your job is to identify who are the people who have THAT kind of irrationality around the thing you are selling and then you need to sell it them and they have the actual means to buy it.
So stop selling to people who don’t have money.
Till next time.
