Thanks will check them out.

Chidi.

Wasn't a problem at all :)

Chidi.

Preciate you, I feel that for sure. I know some of the scenes with school staff and ESPECIALLY police get me heated Apologies if I at all came across as dismissive or condescending

space colon

I enjoy your contributions here! You've made completely valid points above. My view of Donnelly might be skewed because I used to encounter teachers like her on the few occasions I got into trouble at school. But I take your point - she's doing her job under difficult circumstances.

Chidi.

If you’re curious I recommend checking out their videos on Midnight Mass and Haunting of Hillhouse. Neither show is especially jump scare heavy but they both do get jump scared (rip Milena) and the discussions are pretty on point

space colon

I lived in Atlanta the year they changed zoning laws and made it illegal to hand out water to people in line to vote If not for Stacey Abrams Georgia would have elected politicians who expressed interest in hindering voters even more (including abolishing absentee ballets)

@Chidi. Appreciate your response, your comments are always on point Before replying I do want to say that I don’t in anyway want to excuse school staff in the show or IRL who put children in any kind of danger or lead them to feel fear. Anyone with power over the lives of children and minors should be aware of that power and how not to use it What I love about The Wire is that there is so much nuance to the characters, they are cogs in a system that continues to create victims I’m coming from a perspective as someone who has a lot of empathy for staff in inner city schools, if you feel that I am doing Randy a disservice with my response I’d appreciate you letting me know Glad you pointed out the wall tagging, I had forgotten she had talked to him about it. Throwing that on him without evidence was beyond unfair. I think she did him a favor though by not calling his foster mother then (even though he was skipping class and selling candy) I think I could have been a bit more clear on what I meant in using the word perspective, I think she’s aware of Randy’s situation as a foster child at risk of being put back in the system. I was really referring to Randy’s situation with the two boys and Tiffany I wanna go over the scene she has with Randy this episode. At the beginning of the scene she says that Tiffany claimed Randy was there. Randy replies that he wasn’t and that it wasn’t even a rape because “she wanted to”. She then asks “How do you know, you said you weren’t there?” His story doesn’t line up (I’m not coming down on Randy, I absolutely adore him). I think a vice principal in an inner city school in Baltimore has probably encountered many situations in which her students have suffered from SA or worse. This situation in particular seems bring out a lot of emotions in her, she made a comment in a previous episode about HIV (I do wish the show would have focused more on the struggles of adolescent girls) She tells him “there will be an investigation and you’ll be suspended” The suspension would have taken place regardless of wether or not SA of any kind occurred, Randy was in the hall on the lookout for school staff while two boys went into the bathroom with a girl After this she tells Randy “you could very well be expelled, maybe even face criminal charges” and proceeds to call his foster mother. Again I think most any school official would say these things to a boy in Randy’s shoes. These aren’t threats, she’s explaining the gravity of the situation and potential punishments What I don’t like is her saying “I know about it already” in response to Randy saying he’ll explain further. We don’t know what she was going to tell Randy’s foster mother but I doubt she’d lie and tell her that she knows for a fact that Randy was there, she legally can’t do that She would have probably told his foster mother that there was an investigation into a potential r***. That the victim claimed Randy was present, looking out for school staff Randy himself confirmed that he was doing just that I really don’t think she behaved inappropriately in this situation outside of having a very stern and blunt attitude (which I feel was justified given what she believed)

space colon

"We see Randy’s perspective but she doesn’t." I disagree, she'd have been familiar enough with Randy's perspective and situation yet still threatened him with suspension, expulsion and dropped the possibility of criminal charges. But if you're right and she doesn't see Randy's perspective then that's her failure. She previously threatened to call his foster mother when without evidence claimed he was tagging the walls. I find her actions unnecessarily punitive.

Chidi.

Clay Davis is the funniest character every scene he’s in is comedy. Namonds mom might be the worst person in the show. Everyone including Chris that are the worst most likely have had a very traumatic and traumatizing childhood and gone through very traumatic experiences making them develop differently into straight up sociopaths like Chris and Marlo or people like prop joe and stringer who are just warped from their environments completely. Namonds mom is just like this, even if bad stuff happened it couldn’t have made her like this. She’s just a genuinely awful person who never changed. I don’t think anything made her like this like most of the other horrible people in the show. She just a complete narcissist who manipulates and cares nothing about her son. Randy is such a polite and nice kid he doesn’t deserve anything to happen to him. He didn’t even do anything. It’s so saddening seeing them with no chances or help they would all be successful and have good lives if not for stuff completely out of their control.

the chosen one

I think it’s also possible she was paid by the other boys, Namond has the “50 cents” comment and she walked away from the bathroom last episode hanging her head low with negative body language Not saying she couldn’t have had the same body language if it was a situation she agreed to without pay (I do think there are levels to this and she could have possibly been coerced who knows)

space colon

As someone who’s been in environments working with large groups of kids who are constantly being failed by the system I have some empathy for Mrs Donnelly, have met and worked with people like her From the beginning we’ve seen her absolutely pessimistic. She’s been in this job for who knows how many years and has undoubtedly seen all kinds of horrors the kids have had to deal with She may have entered this line of work as hopeful as Prez and been absolutely beaten down by the fact that her work means next to nothing. She’s aware the majority of the kids she’s working with aren’t being helped Both instances with Randy she told him she’d call his foster mom, that’s just standard procedure for the situations we saw him in Could she have talked to him in a less blunt way? Sure, but I didn’t see either situation as a threat. She’s outlining potential consequences and not sugar coating thing for him, she knows how serious things will be if Randy continues to get caught in similar circumstances When you’re in charge of an understaffed underfunded school with hundreds of children there really isn’t anything she can do but call the parents or social workers of the kids who have them. We see Randy’s perspective but she doesn’t

space colon

@Kya Colosseum Hard agree, I think we accept that people who kill are going to exist A parental figure on the other hand is a staple in most people’s lives and we expect a parent to protect their children and not put them in harms way

space colon

I know I love the movies but watching them now the action scenes just go on for so so long, could see Milena’s eyes glazing over during those

space colon

Really appreciate the discussion pointing out the parallels between Dee and Namond, the look Brianna gives Namond makes me think she might have caught the irony of the situation but it doesn’t change anything of course… The scenes with the boys being paid pennies to throw fliers around for an election that they have no power over (that directly affects them) are scenes I would like to show out of context to someone who hasn’t watched the show

space1999

Honestly the most shocking part of this review is Lola saying that Lexie is her favourite Greys character when Amelia Sheppard exists.

Wanda Did Nothing Wrong

When someone's genuinely scared it makes for a great reaction and great viewing, more views, etc. They should consider it. :)

Chidi.

I know Milena doesn't watch them. But I'd kill to see her react to horror movies

HenryM

Randy is such a great kid. Smart, kind, charismatic, hard-working...In any other circumstance, the sky would be the limit for a kid like that. The same goes for all of them. It's a great example of what people mean when they talk about privilege and the lie that if you work hard enough, you can be or do anything. These kids would have to work 20 times harder than a middle-class kid, just to keep their heads above water. Most people don't have that in them, let alone children. Everything is rigged for them to fail.

Agent Squirrels

Wrt watching and reacting to a movie - anyone know whether L&M are into horror movies because t'is the season to be frightened...

Chidi.

Great commentary as always. I love how Randy still feels like he has to finish handing out the fliers, even though he basically got forced into it and could've easily stopped early. Shows what a good heart he has.

Mark M

With a mother like Naymonds, who needs enemies?

Darrach

Re: your plans to film a movie reaction, you could just film the entire thing and upload the full uncut reaction here to Patron for the time being, then figure out the editing at a later stage. Or just keep it a Patron-only exclusive for the foreseeable.

TeaDrinker3000

All while probably feigning interest in a girly magazine.

Chidi.

Yea, deciding to sleep around with the mother's of the boys you teach boxing too is such a terrible idea. Cutty is 100% in the wrong for that one, I was very disappointed when I saw that. I honestly can't express enough how terrible I felt for Randy throughout this episode, the boy is so scared of going back into the system and Mrs. Donnelly using that as a threat every time always makes me rage, it's such a horrible thing to do to a child. Loved to see Prez start to really care for these kids, as well as Carver. I don't give Carver nearly enough credit but he honestly might have the best character development in the show. I love how in this season, we don't get a lot of the characters we have been following, because it allows for the show to just show us these kids, so that each child's story is highlighted and none of their stories fall to the wayside.

Nyeisha Melvina Clark

Re-watch Lord of the Rings!! I'm preeeetty sure Milena will like it now.

Yic17

You mentioned, with regards to Dennis not being able to vote, the show deliberately including passing commentary on social issues. Another example of that in this episode was when Miss Anna (Randy’s foster mom) expressed her frustration that she was gonna be late for work because of the queue to vote. In many other democracies, voting occurs on a public holiday/weekend (or over a period of a week) to maximise the amount of people that can vote… but in America they have elections on weekdays which mean many people (especially those in low-paying jobs without flexible hours) can’t vote because they can’t get time off work.

David

The day Lola forces Milena to watch LOTR will be huge on this channel

Karabo

It’s fine girls; you’re gonna have a rough time.

SwampFox95

It's not that difficult a role honestly, very one note

Brendan

Colicchio is stupid and a shitty person but I still have him over Walker on my Wire police rankings.

Doug

Yes this is correct.

prolifik5

Also "American democracy, let's show those third world fucks how it's done" what a great fucking line

HenryM

Being a less reasonable parent than a mass murdering sociopath is impressive work.

prolifik5

Delonda is a biiiiiiitch. I feel bad for Randy. I also feel bad for Namond, I kinda thought he was a punk when I watched the show for the first time, but I realise now most of that was just an act.

Aj

"Fuck your falling chips" is an underrated line. Rawls is just hilarious.

prolifik5

Find it insane that I can watch Chris soullessly murder an absolute angel of a delivery lady and still think that DeLonda is even more of a devil. Definitely has everything to do with the expectation we put on mothers to be loving and caring people to their children, but it still melts my brain a little just how much more I despise her compared to objectively far worse characters.

Kya Colosseum

Honestly, props to DeLonda's actress, great rage inducing performance

HenryM

Oh my God yes I forgot to mention that hahaha!! They're hatred of him and Naymond's mom is so on point.

TeaDrinker3000

"Shut the fuck up, look at your hair!" - Lola on Officer Colicchio. 💀

Chidi.

On Wednesday I finished re-watching The Wire with my Mam (it was her first time seeing it), and not only do I think that season 5 is insanely underrated (myself personally preferring it Season 3 by a considerable degree), but it might be one of my favourite series finales of all time. TeaDrinker3000

I would have perhaps thought that, were it not for the fact that the girls (Lola in particular) commented on how Tiff looked uncomfortable coming out of the bathroom in 4x05. But it could be a misinterpretation.

TeaDrinker3000

Great comparison!

Chidi.

Miss Donnelly is the Jay Landsman of the school staff. Just trying to keep the funding coming in and the bosses off everyone's backs, which unfortunately means treating each child with the same detached, approach the homicide unit uses for their bodies.

Mike Conlin

When Alan Sepinwall reviewed the episode, he remarked that it takes a special kind of horrible to be the worst mother in a scene including Breonna Barksdale.

Mike Conlin

Agree. That was my read of the situation too. It was a 'consensual' sexual encounter between underage kids, and Tiff looked awkward coming out of the bathroom mostly because sexual encounters at a young age are often awkward; and perhaps more so in a public space.

Chidi.

My impression, of what the show is implying, regarding the Tiff situation is that the sex was consensual but that she changed her story to rape to get back at the boys for disrespecting her. Tiff seemed happy to see the boys as they walked down the hallway the next day and said “Hi Monell” and smiled, but they just ignored her and made fun of her so she decided to say it was rape. I’m not sure if I interpreted that correctly but that’s at least the vibe I got.

David

Some episode trivia... Detective Norris: “Fuck no, I don’t even vote!” This line is amusing because the actor playing Ed Norris (also named Ed Norris) was actually the Commissioner of the Baltimore Police Department whilst The Wire was filmed (S1). He later did 6 months in jail for financial fraud before returning to the show and is ineligible to vote as he’s a convicted felon. Omar… One of the big dudes who Butchie sent to protect Omar is the “real life Omar” and one of the inspirations for the character. Politics… Btw, you’ve said the the election/politics doesn’t interest you. Well, quick story time - before S4 was commissioned, David Simon had planned a spin-off show called ‘The Hall’ which would have followed Carcetti, Royce and Grey during the mayoral election. When S4 was eventually commissioned, the election story then had to be re-introduced to 'The Wire' at the expense of some other storylines.

Chidi.

Speaking of editing, I really recommend you girls just get an editor. If you're worried about their skill, you can always just give them a test run with an episode and see how they do. But any editor who does this for a living, should be able to do a similar job to you. It would also probably solve the issue of late uploads.

ODIS

Your reactions to Namonds mother had me dying 😂 she definitely the main “villain” Marlo just a gangsta doing gangsta shit but that lady just evil her and then Ms Donnelly a close second threatening to call Randy foster mom all the time 😠

Thomas

Good thumbnail clip there. Poor Randy. He's a really good kid and I don’t like how Miss Donnelly handled that situation with him although I recognise the seriousness of the rape allegation made by Tiffany. Let's dive into the episode!
