I used to consider myself a leftist, not a Democrat, but a left anarchist. During the 2000 election, I got swept up in the “George W. Bush is Hitler” mentality, including the whole, “I’ll move to Canada if he wins.” line. I even made a Bush as Hitler sticker. Obviously Bush won. I voted for Ralph Nader, most of the Democrats around me said I was throwing away my vote. This was when we still lived in Oakland, California. Bush’s win didn’t throw me off my course, neither did 9-11. I thought that America was to blame for 9-11, the first thing I thought was the Malcolm X quote about “The chickens coming home to roost.” Me & Katie protested the following war, attending those massive protests. It was at one of these protests that a green-haired three letter communist party drone tried to sell me a newspaper. I argued that he should have given me the newspaper for free. Then I argued that he should organize me, come on down to the library & actually organize the working class. As I started to crack his ideology, his handler, a woman twice his age came & got him & called me a fascist. This turned me around. If I wanted to change this country, which I still do, it wasn’t going to be with these people as my comrades. No fucking way. This seems like a meme at this point, but I had similar interactions with leftists that hated people, not just Americans, extending back to my early involvement in the anarchist scene, extending forwards to living in Eugene & then moving up to Portland. I decided that the people of this country deserved a better system & the world deserved a USA that wasn’t starting wars in order to sell weapons. I went towards Libertarianism as communicated to me by Top Dog, the best East Bay hot dog spot that had a Libertarian owner. Libertarianism was a way to ease up on my Anarchism, but embrace America. My hot dog Americanism was invented. As I continued to interact with leftists it became increasingly clear that these people, who would drop you as a friend because of rough language would be horrible in the trenches of the warfare actually needed to have a revolution. I still feel the same way although now, I feel sympathy for these people that are so wound up in their hatred of the other that is probably an externalized self-hatred. The way I see things now is that the events in History are just points in timelines that have lots of events that are just as important leading up to them & then away from them. That said, the election was determined by history, even though the actual vote was just one day.
