The biggest one was that there were simply too many cute characters—so I had to divide the screen time evenly among them.
I have to say, it was thanks to my paneling style that I managed to fit more into each page than usual, which made it possible to include all six main characters.
Even so, there were still many I couldn’t draw.
For example, the owl twins and the horse girl—especially the horse girl. The idea of her in a sporty bodysuit was just chef’s kiss.
Because I wanted so badly to draw both of these groups, we ended up making a bonus booklet at the time, featuring the owls and the horse girl, which we gave away as a gift for on-site purchases.
I’m not sure if it’s connected, but around the time Kemono Friends was shelved due to the director replacement controversy, the horse girl idea was picked up by another company and developed into an entirely new IP: Uma Musume.
Back then I wanted to draw them, and honestly, I still do—there are so many characters I love, like Gold Ship.
But since that IP still doesn’t allow R18 content, it’s truly a shame.
