I love visiting the area that the Turtle River Highway is based on. And I really enjoy getting a chance to draw all the cool dramatic shapes and textures that you don't find in a city.

Lillian's enthusiasm for trivia and comes in handy when Barry and I want to give the reader some historical context for what's going on in the story. That's why Barry came up with the idea of a 1980s frame story in the first place. I thought it would be really funny if 1980s Lillian's info-dumping showed up in 1940s Lillian's dialogue and everything ground to a halt for a minute. In true webcomic-making fashion, I got the idea for this gag last autumn, so it feels great to share the finished page with you!

Barry put this photo of Mitchell Point Tunnel into the script as an example of a scenic feature to draw in page 200. In my opinion, it was too cool to squeeze into that page.

When I googled Mitchell Point Tunnel for more information, I found out that:

  1. it had been closed in 1954 because larger vehicles and heavier traffic were causing rockslides

  2. a car-free replica tunnel was being opened as part of the Historic Highway State Trail, and there was a ribbon-cutting ceremony that weekend!

In true SuperButch fashion, I contacted one of my friends with a car and we had a double-date Big Gay Road Trip to the Gorge.

Love seeing and hearing about the transition from thought to study to actual completed work! How cool!
