Jackie Ormes returns! This cartoonist was known for drawing glamorous fashion as well as political/social commentary. So when she appears in SuperButch, I want to do her wardrobe justice.
Here's a page of "Torchy's Togs," a paper doll series that appeared next to the Sunday issue of "Torchy in Heartbeats." (The original Torchy Brown strip ended in 1938, but Jackie Ormes got to bring Torchy back in the early 1950s!)
When I need to pick an outfit for someone, I usually start with my library copies of "fashionable clothing from the sears catalogs, late 1930s/early 1940s." But a lot of the professional ladies' wear either looked too similar to Lillian's outfit, or (imo) wasn't that cute. Also, I found a bunch of Jackie Ormes' fashion drawings online. Surely she'd want to wear one of those! Then I had a moment of panic that if I picked the wrong outfit, one day, someone, somewhere would look at this page of SuperButch, realize I drew Jackie Ormes wearing an evening dress or a casual ensemble to a work meeting, and, just like in real life when you wear an inappropriate outfit to a social or professional function, it will result in death and dishonor! AAAAAAAA maybe I get a little too worked up about clothes.
Anyway, I liked the outfit in panel 3 of this strip, so I drew that:

I hope you liked this peek at my process!
I had a couple of other drawing activities this week. Naomi and I drew some Postcards to Voters:

...and I went to a Sunrise Movement "Youth Against ODOT" demonstration for climate justice.

The teens did these chalk drawings outside the ODOT headquarters downtown. (I drew the Climate Justice for Dummies book, but I'm not sure if it was legible.)

I overheard about 5 high school students arguing about where to draw which continent: XD
I wasn't sure about how much to participate that afternoon...

and to be honest I was feeling pretty pessimistic.

A middle-aged ODOT employee in a Serious Cyclist Outfit came up to us before commuting home. He said that ODOT can't change anything, and we need to go through our representatives. Funnily enough, Khanh Pham, an Oregon state representative, spoke to the crowd that day. She referenced a couple of recent victories in terms of environment and road safety, and I felt a little more optimistic.
As always, thank you so much for supporting me on Patreon! Happy September, Happy New Year if applicable, and have a great weekend!
