Gyokouyouโs, and another concubine youโll meet later, their ladies in waiting are just different. Most of them are way too high strung to care about little details. MaoMao on the other hand grew up almost in poverty with a taste of certain luxuries being around the courtesans. Yet at the same time she grew up with a very educated father - so sheโs built different.

2025-07-04 12:30:58 +0000 UTC6:00 Maomao is a commoner and the ladies-in-waiting are from prominent families, defying them could have gotten Maomao beaten or even beheaded. Even though the ladies are high ranked Jinshi is in charge of the rear palace so has high rank also. Slapping a higer rank person would have had Maomao executed, but with Jinshi there informing them that the Emperor sent Maomao and the fact they were poisoning a high ranking concubine mitigated the results. The technique is called Paizuri, google is your friend.

Her character is WRITTEN well and intelligently. She is relatable as well as attractive, both physically and emotionally. And the way she reacts to Jinshi is adorable!
