question for you guys

how do you feel about the youtuber "rationality rules"

Comments

I really like RR. I just watched your interview with him. Reminded me why I like him so much. I remember at the time of his denouncement by the ACA thinking it seemed more a political move on their part, feeling they needed to distance themselves quickly and potentially pick up the pieces at a later date. It seemed that way to me as an outsider of course and I have no way of confirming or disproving. I watched his response to the situation and his re-thinking of research and position re: the video that prompted all the drama. He does great content and his handle is appropriate..

But his first vid was incorrect, for the record. He corrected it in subsequent videos

I know the people at the ACA. The ones who did that quit out of solidarity. Steve and I are still on very good terms with the remaining aca members

Do not know him greatly, but have seen some of the controversy around him that seemed overkill. Anyone can and should be able to state their take on an issue even if it is not a popular one. From what I have heard he took appropriate responses to the criticism he received. That should be a good sign in a person's work if they can take feedback and modify their stance based on new information.

Overall I like him fine. He makes great points and is very logical. But I feel he can come across as condescending much of the time. So I prefer not to watch most of his videos. I will definitely check out your video with him though. I don't dislike him.

I think he had a point with his trans athletes video, even if saying so isn't pc. If a trans athlete has an advantage due to their birth gender they are not playing fair. He got totally back stabbed and screwed over by the ACA and I resent them for it so much I dropped my Patreon donation to them from $5 to $1. I only left the $1 because they do other good work for the cause.

I don't always agree with him but I've watched videos of his that I like. I'd say overall I feel neutral about him. I think the drama around him was way over the top though. Sometimes we all make mistakes and no one's perfect

I voted other because I know of him (his videos are sometimes suggested to me by the algorithm), but they have never appealed to me. I have of course noticed the drama around his transgender athletes video and the terrible shit show that followed - because I do watch Rachel Oates. Since I don't really know him and am far from being an expert on trans issues myself, I will not pass judgement on his motives and assume that the things he said that rubbed people the wrong way probably came from a place of ignorance or being misinformed himself rather than malice. (So I am with most of the people who commented so far.)

i didnt address his positions on trans issues, only talked about his religious/non-religious upbringing, how he came up with the name, etc. standard stuff. nothing really controversial. for the record, ive always said you be who you are and ill support you. his first video on the subject was obviously toxic BS but he released corrections, and while he may not be where i am with it, i do believe in redemption, and i dont believe in shunning. that's why i decided to do a vid with him

Telltale Atheist

I'm also on the meh boat too. While I worry for you in pursuing this, I hope people can appreciate the video for what it is, whatever it'll be.

I chose “other” because I don’t strongly like or dislike him. I’m fairly ambivalent. I’m trans since that’s relevant here. I’m not thrilled with the idea of you doing a video with him but I trust that you will give the situation the nuance it deserves. You always give a balanced view on things and I respect that. Looking forward to seeing it.

Cerulean

i agree

Telltale Atheist

Don't like, don't hate, just meh, really. I think his video was woefully bad in hindsight but absolutely don't feel that his misinformed video came from a place of hate. Both sides of the argument misrepresented some things (whether deliberately or through ignorance) and ONE side was full of vindictive spite and hatred. As I don't know him personally, I can only go on the videos and yeah. I don't feel strongly either way about him as a person.

i know this isnt going to be a popular video, but i just recorded with him. i dont believe in shunning. ever. so i decided to work with him, for better or worse

Telltale Atheist

I enjoy his content, and I think he’s been wrongly labeled as transphobic just because he has a different opinion than is popular. He backed it up with legitimate facts and addressed the counter theories.
