I think my problem with this explanation is that Mahito says Yuji is aware of souls because Sukuna resides within him. Because there are 2 souls within him, Yuji is now able to discern souls. Inversely, that would mean Yuji was unable to discern souls before he became Sukuna's vessel. So he would have no reference for Ozawa's soul because he could not see it before. it's like, even though we as humans are able to recognize faces, we cannot recognize a face we have not seen before. So even though Yuji can recognize souls now, he cannot recognize a soul he could not previously perceive, meaning Ozawa.
