Getting The Bugs Out

THIS IS NOT A CHARGED POST

So close to being good, but just managed to dodge greatness!

Pokémon Journey, Episode 144

Comments

It is indeed odd that the anime actually accounted for them having Johto critters vs the games

When it comes to Suede's comment on Bugsy's pronouns, I feel this is more complex than Suede make it seem. Bulbapedia doesn't really going into detail about the way Bugsy speaks in the games, like do they say "watashi" or "atashi" or what? Plus, a major issue is how in Japanese, these pronouns aren't quite an indicator of one's gender identity while in English, so Suede's comments about Bugsy possibly not identity as the gender officially presented could come across as iffy. He basically says that a character that with a masculine appearance but an effeminate manner of speaking is gender fluid or non-binary, which comes across as a well meaning, but likely misguided way to be nice to the LGBT+ community, but it comes across as a redressing of the old "If a guy's kinda effeminate, they're gay" stereotyping insult. By this logic, any tomboyish character in anime who uses boku as their preferred pronoun is someone who is not cisgendered. Japanese pronouns could also indicate if someone's full of themselves, like if they identify by "ore", or if someone's meant to be a farmer or hick if they use "oira" for example. TL:DR, saying Bugsy (or Will since he was also mention) as possibly being genderfluid or non-binary, comes across as well meaning, but not only ignorant of how Japanese pronouns work, but also re-enforcing harmful stereotypes about LGBT+ people.

Verdant Range

So what you’re telling me is they could IMPROVE Bugsy’s team by the slightest margin, but only because they didn’t have to scale for Charizard anymore.
