First of all, really glad you're feeling better Dj :)
Second of all, WooHoo! Season 2!
The acting throughout this episode, from everyone, is so good. You feel all of their pain, and the incredible relief, it's just fantastic.
I also love the switch up from traditional myths with this, of Merlin getting the better of Nimueh, when in the books its always her tricking him out of his power and screwing him over. Which, she kind of did a bit here, but not properly, and basically I appreciate that Merlin hasn't been turned into a Hawthorne Tree or a boulder.

As it's described by Thomas Malory; who wrote possibly the most famous book of Arthurian myths, Le Morte d'Arthur (coincidentally the title of this episode).
The Questing Beast first appears when Arthur is having a prophetic dream about Mordred and the downfall of Camelot/Albion. The sound of it's call, which was equal to the barking of thirty hunting dogs, wakes him from his dream, and he encountered the gigantic beast with the head of a snake, body of a leopard, rump of a lion and the ability to breath fire and fly (which works for this episode, as it also foretold destruction and upheaval for the kingdom) Before he can draw his sword however, he is interrupted by King Pellinore who tells him "The beast is mine, and mine alone to slay as it is my destiny and my families destiny before me" Arthur is upset at not getting to fight the beast himself, he and Pellinore duel, but since it's Arthur's first ever duel, he loses and Pellinore spares him as he has a much bigger fish to fry.
In the show however, Sir Pellinore died fighting for Arthur against the Black Knight several episodes ago, a quest which is usually handled by Sir Bedivere (I think), but instead, Sir Bedivere was the one to die rescuing Merlin from the Beast at the start of this episode. Which is a weird and kind of fun switch up for the show.
Fun fact:
The Questing Beast is thought by historians to be a Giraffe, but that people seeing it for the first time in the Middle Ages would have thought it a mythical creature. Which kind of tracks as its long neck and small head would look snake like, and the leopard body is just the fizz that Giraffes have. Not sure where the fire breathing and the wings come into it though haha
